Lostocker Jo McManus secured a superb top-10 finish at the Run Heaton Park event.

Participants can run 5k, 10k or half-marathon distance and McManus opted for the 5k event, starting and finishing inside Heaton Park.

The course runs entirely on the concrete paths within Heaton Park and that makes it a fast race with lots of people aiming to get a personal-best time.

McManus had a fantastic run, finishing in 23mins 32secs to finish ninth out of 147 runners and second female, but was awarded the first female medal as the first female to cross the finish line was a pacer. McManus was also first in her age category.

Elsewhere, Tony Marlow travelled to the Lake District to join 1,228 fellow runners competing in the Coniston 14.

This has been descried as the most beautiful road race in Britain as it completes a full circuit of Coniston Water, taking in the villages around the lake. This is still, however, a tough race with an elevation gain of 925 feet.

Marlow had a fantastic race, finishing in 1:49:27
