Blackburn Rovers fell to their fifth successive Championship defeat as anger spilt over in a 2-0 home defeat against Middlesbrough.

Rovers fans made their feeling known throughout as they continued their protests against Venky's ownership and the club's leadership team.

They were given little encouragement by what they witnessed on the field as Boro raced into a 2-0 lead inside eight minutes. That turned an already teetering Ewood Park mutinous.

Tommy Conway scored the first in fewer than 90 seconds. He nicked the ball through and finished brilliantly to put the away side ahead.

The second followed shortly after as Danny Batth headed Samuel Iling-Junior's shot into his own net. The effort was going harmlessly wide and summed up the fortunes of Rovers.

From then on, there was little chance of a Rovers recovery. It took 54 minutes for their first shot which Todd Cantwell wasted, scuffing his effort into the ground and wide when through on goal.

'You're getting sacked in the morning', was the chant from the home fans as they turned on Valerien Ismael after another abject display. The reality is that Rovers' board are right behind their head coach, tied down for the long term. But the fans appear to have made up their mind.

In search of the right formula, Ismael made five changes, recalling Cantwell, Ryan Hedges and Makhtar Gueye to the starting line-up. John Buckley made his first start under the Frenchman whilst Joe Rankin-Costello replaced the injured Hayden Carter.

A fast start was crucial to keep the fans onside and avoid mutiny. But civil war broke out before the referee's first whistle and continued throughout the night.

It took Middlesbrough fewer than 90 seconds to pierce Rovers' defence, a theme that has been constant through Ismael's six-game stint.

It was a brilliant touch and finish from Conway to work the shooting position and fire past Aynsley Pears. But the gaps were gaping in the Blackburn defence; disorganised and pulled apart in minute one.

That only encouraged a baying crowd, with chants against the ownership, Steve Waggott and the senior leadership team. Things then went from bad to worse minutes later.

Middlesbrough grabbed their second as Iling-Junior's shot was deflected in by Batth. An unfortunate ricochet which summed up Rovers' luck and had them staring down the barrel of a fifth-successive defeat.

Considering the team had only won from behind once, in August, there was little hope of them turning around a two-goal deficit. Kelechi Inheanacho could've made it even worse but shot wide when he might have added a third.

Rovers worked their way back into the match in terms of territory and possession but ended the half without a shot to their name. The biggest example of a complete lack of cutting edge and confidence throughout the side.

It wasn't until Cantwell's big opportunity on 54' that they took aim at Mark Travers' goal. Having got through the Boro defence, Cantwell scuffed his shot into the ground and it bobbled harmlessly wide. A shot with the conviction of a man yet to score from open play.

Rovers fans then turned their attention to Ismael. 'You're getting sacked in the morning' and 'Ismael, time to go', was the clear message with the team set for a fifth successive league defeat for the first time since February 2021.

If this was the Titanic, the rats would be jumping into the Atlantic by this point. A fan base completely disconnected from every facet of their football club was making their feelings known.

The anger turned to apathy as the minutes ticked down, with Rovers showing little sign of turning the tide. They at least worked Travers with an effort from half-time substitute, Yuki Ohashi, denied at the near post.

That was the best that they mustered on a torrid night for Blackburn. A club at war with their own fans and a head coach showing little sign of turning around a sinking ship.
