Swindon Harriers had a club record tumble as they agonisingly missed out on a podium in the Midlands 12-Stage Road Relay.

The men’s team came home fourth, which was a bittersweet moment as they were lying third until the agonising closing stages when Isaac McAdam was caught.

But McAdam only had four hours of sleep after a 34-hour, three-flight journey back from the Philippines, only getting home at 10 pm the previous night, so he wasn’t at his best.

McAdam said: “I definitely was missing something during the race and feel pretty beaten up today, but anything for the Harriers.

“Gutted we missed out on a medal, but we will be back next year for it, no doubt.”

As team manager Simon Dill said, McAdam showed “real guts” to put himself on the line for the club.

Dill said: “We were third for so long and so close to the end, but we are getting closer and closer.”

The fastest runners on the day for the club were Harry Woods (15 minutes 38 seconds, a club record), Ben Lines (15:39) and Isaac Mould (15:58).

In the Midlands U15s 5k Championships, in-form Finley Byrne, who has just been awarded chairman Howard Moscrop’s athlete of the month accolade for March, was second.
