A North East BBC presenter left viewers in tears on Monday evening (March 17) after sharing an emotional photo with the cameras.

Look North viewers were moved to tears during the evening news after anchor Carol Malia shared an emotional story at the end of the programme.

Following Newcastle United's historic Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool at the weekend - the club's first domestic trophy in 70 years - Malia revealed her father, who died 11 months ago, was one of Newcastle's biggest fans.

She showed a photo of him to the TV cameras, saying: "I just want to say a personal note, this is my lovely Dad, Newcastle United’s biggest fan.

"We put [the photo] in front of the TV yesterday to watch, it would have meant a lot to him.

"We lost him 11 months ago, it means a lot to many people around the region."

Viewers took to social media to express their feelings.

One viewer, John, wrote on X: "A lovely fitting end to tonight's Look North Carol.

"I have been emotional thinking about my dad, cousin, and best mate who were mad Newcastle fans but sadly are no longer with us so can totally relate to your tribute to your dad."

Local lad Dan Burn opened the scoring for Newcastle in the final, with Alexander Isak ensuring that a late goal from Liverpool's Federico Chiesa was meaningless - if not nail-biting. It gave the club their first domestic trophy in 70 years and the first major piece of silverware since the Inter-cities Fairs Cup in 1969.

It is an achievement that led The Northern Echo's chief sports writer Scott Wilson to hail manager Eddie Howe as 'Newcastle United's greatest modern-day manager', saying: "Howe is now a Newcastle legend.

"Coach, leader, the man who ended 70 years of hurt. Sir Bobby would be the first to congratulate him. “Well done bonny lad, you did well.”"

BBC Look North airs weeknights at 6.30pm.
