This was the moment more than 7,000 football fans paid a moving tribute to ten-year-old Poppy Atkinson.

Supporters at Carlisle United's game against AFC Wimbledon took part in a minute's applause in memory of the football-mad girl who was tragically killed in Kendal earlier this month.

United became the latest club in the county and beyond to remember Poppy.

Her face appeared on the big screen at Brunton Park as an overall crowd of 7,050, as well as players, coaches and officials, applauded before United's 2-1 defeat.

Sporting teams across Cumbria have been holding similar tributes since Poppy was fatally struck by a car at Kendal Rugby Club on Wednesday, March 5.

And Manchester United Women also paid a special tribute to Poppy at their Barclays Women’s Super League match at Anfield, dedicating a space on their social media graphic team line-up, with Poppy's name replacing that of her hero, Ella Toone, next to the number seven in the listed XI.

A seat in the away dugout was also reserved to Poppy throughout the match with her name embroidered on the back of the shirt.

In front of 15,596 fans, a minute’s silence prior to kick-off was also observed whilst both teams wore black armbands in memory of Poppy.
