The Six Nations title race has gone down to the final match of the championship, as France look to secure the title against Scotland in Paris tonight. Les Blues are in pole position and know a bonus-point victory would seal the title, while a win of any kind would almost certainly be enough due to their points-difference advantage over England.
France took control of the title race last weekend with a sensational display in Dublin, thrashing Ireland to end their Grand Slam hopes. That came even with Antoine Dupont limping off in the first-half with a serious knee injury, one that means France will once again be without their captain and the world’s best player tonight.
Scotland have two wins and two defeats from this Six Nations, and they were not hugely convincing in a 35-29 victory over Wales a week ago. Scotland did win in Paris in 2021, the first time they had done so in 22 years, in a result that wrecked France’s title hopes, and they will be eyeing something similar here. Antoine Dupont is expected to miss six to nine months in a hammer blow for France, club side Toulouse and the sport of rugby in general, but understudy Maxime Lucu was excellent off the bench in Dublin and will deputise from the start now at scrum-half as number 8 Gregory Alldritt takes over the captaincy.
That is one of two changes from Galthie to the French team that started against Ireland, with vastly experienced centre Gael Fickou also returning in place of Pierre-Louis Barassi, who suffered concussion last weekend.
Otherwise France are unchanged, with Nolann Le Garrec providing cover for Lucu as the only back on a bench that shows another Springbok-esque 7-1 split.
It’s a risky strategy that some claim is having a profound effect on the game, but it paid off handsomely in Dublin with no let up in the fearsome physicality.
