THE Isle of Wight RFC's second team played their first match in over a year.

ISLE OF WIGHT SECONDS 27, SOUTHAMPTON SECONDS 34

In the friendly against Southampton, at Wootton Rec on Saturday (March 1), the visitors claimed a narrow victory.

Southampton were supported by Fareham Heathens players and two loaned from the hosts, ensuring a competitive match.

In the sunshine, Isle of Wight started strong with Nick Blyth scoring the opening try.

Southampton responded with two tries, but James Webster scored the Island's second.

At half-time, the Islanders trailed 22-10.

The second half saw Isle of Wight gaining control, but handling errors prevented them from adding to their score.

Southampton extended their lead with another try, before Isle of Wight dominated the final 15 minutes.

Dan Bishop scored two quick tries, reducing the deficit to 27-20.

Karl Davey then scored a memorable try from his own half, with Ross Edmunds adding the conversion to level the scores.

However, Southampton's controversial late try secured their win.
