Unai Emery suggests complacency has been a factor in Aston Villa's stop-start league campaign after his side missed the opportunity to move into the top five on Tuesday night, losing 4-1 to Crystal Palace.

Villa headed to Selhurst Park on the back of a 2-1 win over Chelsea, which followed a 2-2 draw against title favourites Liverpool.

Before those impressive results, Villa failed to beat Ipswich Town and West Ham either side of losing 2-0 to Wolves at Molineux.

Villa aren't cut adrift from the top five, but they've missed plenty of opportunities to prove themselves as credible Champions League challengers.

"There are a lot of things, small details we have to try to continue working on and we are doing it," Emery said.

"The mentality is to be consistent, to be demanding every day, to play each match with the same wishes, the same energy, being very demanding and respectful for the opponent in every action on the field.

"There are a lot of things. Mentlaity is a lot of things in one way that we have to try to add.

"Football is very difficult. When we are winning of course sometimes we forget some tasks we have to do every day because sometimes when you are winning you feel invincible.

"Sometimes then some results come which show the reality, the difficulties you have. This is the mentality: understand every day and be focused on the difficulties you can face.

"They are coming now a lot of matches: tomorrow Cardiff, Brugge, Brentford. We will show again how we can react."
