TWO teams separated by only three goals fighting for one promotion spot.

And with only two games left to play.

It's all set for a hugely dramatic end to Middlesbrough Women's season.

Remarkably, despite losing only once in 20 games, Michael Mulhern's side find themselves second in National League Division One North.

Boro and leaders Cheadle Town are level on points and separated by only three goals. But Boro are very much in form, having won their last four games - perfectly teeing up what they hope is a late twist in the race for the title.

And next up, in what could well be the women's side's biggest game since their official affiliation with the football club in the summer of 2023, is a game at the Riverside.

Boro host Doncaster Rovers Belles a week tomorrow, on Sunday, April 13 (2pm), a game they will not only have to win but potentially win well, for if Cheadle aren't to slip up, Mulhern's side need to overturn the goal difference deficit.

Doncaster are currently second bottom in the table, having won just three of their 20 games. And on the same day, Cheadle face a tough trip to Huddersfield, who are fourth.

But Cheadle's last game of the season is then at home to bottom of the table Fylde, whereas Boro travel to mid-table Barnsley.

"This is just the league all over," says Ben Fisher, Boro Women's general manager.

"With only one team being promoted, it comes down to this. We're so close to achieving what we set out at the start of the season, but we need to get over the line.

"If Cheadle are going to drop any points I'm assuming it's going to be at Huddersfield.

"But even if they don't, we have to hope we can get our goal difference up. Last year we beat Doncaster 5-0 at the Riverside, and that was without having the light at the end of the tunnel like we do this season.

"We have to keep our feet on the floor. I know we have to think about goal-difference but we have to win the game first.

"But that game at the Riverside is huge for us. Huge. And the more support we can get, the better. We're potentially two games away from winning promotion. It would be great if we can get one big push from the fans.

"I'm sure they'll enjoy it and then come and watch our games more often at Stockton."

More than 1,000 tickets have already been sold for the game and season ticket holders have until noon tomorrow (Sunday) to secure a seat for free. Admission is also free for Over-65s and Under-18s, while all other tickets are just £5.

Fisher added: "To win promotion would be massive.

"We're a long way from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, but we want to be successful and we're heading in the right direction.

"There's an awful lot of hard work gone into it, from Mick, the players, the staff who are voluntary. It would be massive to go up. Hopefully these next two games go our way."
