Steven Schumacher believes it is important to have a pathway from the Academy to the senior ranks at Wanderers.

Julian Darby’s Under-18 side are having an impressive season and secured silverware on Wednesday night, beating Blackpool 2-0 in the LFA Youth Cup final.

Some members of Darby’s squad, and Andy Taylor’s B Team side, have had the chance to train with the first team in recent weeks.

“I communicate every day with Andy, he comes in every morning and we quite often need a couple of his players from the B Team to come and join the first team. We have also had Julian's players train with us which is great experience for them," Schumacher told The Bolton News.

“We had two young lads over last week and they were dead nervous coming to train with the first team because the B Team were actually playing a game, but they did brilliantly.

“I think having that pathway for the young players into the first team is so important. The communication between all of us has to be right.

“They need to know the principles of how I want to play and therefore they can get their messages into the young lads so - when they do step into the first team, either for training or into a game situation – they are ready to play their part.

“It is a brilliant result for Jules, his team are having a great season. They are flying in the league and have got themselves a trophy so I'm pleased for them.

“I saw them (on Thursday) and said congratulations. He has had an eventful season as well, Jules, so it’s been good.”

The first team continue their play-off push against Bristol Rovers this afternoon and Aaron Morley is back from suspension following his red card at Blackpool.

“He has been a good player for us, he's had a good season,” Schumacher added. “Obviously, he spent the first half on loan at Wycombe, who were flying.

“He has come back in here and played a huge part in the success we've had since I've been here and scored some big goals for us.

“He was disappointed to get sent off the way he did at Blackpool and we missed him, but the lads who stepped in and played on Tuesday night have done a great job.”
