Wycombe Wanderers head coach Mike Dodds has admitted preparation for the Chairboys’ upcoming home fixture against Shrewsbury Town will be ‘a bit difficult’ due to the Shrews’ most recent managerial change.

The Shropshire-based team are rock bottom of League One with just 28 points, and parted ways with manager Gareth Ainsworth last week.

The ex-Wanderers boss had been due to return to Adams Park for the first time since leaving South Bucks in February 2023 but decided to jump ship and join League Two Gillingham.

Former Oxford United, Lincoln City and Charlton Athletic boss has taken over, having been appointed on March 26, just three days before they visited league leaders Birmingham City.

They lost 4-1 at St Andrew’s, meaning they are the only side in the 72 (Championship, League One and League Two), to have less than 30 points this season.

Speaking after the victory over Lincoln City, Dodds said: “I’ll be honest, it is a bit difficult as you can’t look inside the new manager’s head in terms of what they are thinking.

“You don’t know if they are going to have a different style of football to try and get that spark, or is he going to try and win games of football by making things really stodgy.

“We’ll watch the Birmingham game to see what they did, we’ll gauge off that, but for us, I do not want Wycombe Wanderers to be worrying about other teams.

“I want us to have a style of play, an ideology of where we say, ‘this is what we do’ regardless of who we play and that’s the long-term vision.”

One player he hopes will continue their good form in Tuesday night’s clash is Cam Humphreys.

The 21-year-old scored the winner in the 1-0 victory against Lincoln City on March 29, with this strike being his seventh of the season and his third in 10 games.

Dodds continued: “He is a big player for us and he’s consistent in terms of his actions, willingness to learn and his performances.

“He won his award by pressing the ball and do we want to see a more attractive goal? Of course we do, but, he took his chance well.

“He’s been brilliant for us.”
