THOMAS TUCHEL has revealed that Anthony Gordon is “unable to walk properly” after suffering a hip injury during England’s win over Albania on Friday night.
Gordon was withdrawn from the England squad for tomorrow evening’s World Cup qualifier with Latvia earlier today.
The Newcastle United winger has returned to Tyneside for treatment, with the Magpies’ medical team set to conduct a series of tests in the next 24 hours.
The severity of Gordon’s hip problem is still being assessed, with Tuchel revealing that extensive bruising around the 24-year-old’s hip region is severely limiting his mobility.
“It’s just a matter of pain,” said the England boss, who introduced Gordon as a second-half substitute in Friday’s win. “There’s a big bruise around the hip region and he’s unable to walk properly.
“He left camp. He has a huge bruise around the hip region and it was so painful he couldn’t even walk properly. He needs some time to heal and to get better. That’s why he left camp.
“It’s a shame because he had a good chance to start, and I’m sad that he is now out. He was so happy to play and get some minutes for us. He had a red card (against Brighton), then he got sick – he came a bit late into camp – and gets his minutes and gets straightaway injured.
“I’m sad for him but we cannot change it, and I think he still needs a couple of days rest, so he’s with his family now to get the rest and we find other solutions.”
Gordon is suspended for Newcastle’s next Premier League game against Brentford on April 2, but Eddie Howe will be hoping he is sufficiently recovered to be able to return to domestic action in the game at Leicester City five days later.
