NEWCASTLE United forward Anthony Gordon has been forced to withdraw from the England squad after suffering an injury in the win over Albania.

The 24-year-old came off the bench late on in Friday’s 2-0 win over Albania but sustained a hip problem which saw him limp off down the tunnel at the final whistle.

He underwent a scan on Saturday and while the severity of the injury has not been revealed, the forward has now returned to Newcastle to begin treatment.

After Friday’s victory, head coach Thomas Tuchel said of Gordon: “He looks injured. First of all I thought it’s his stomach, but it’s his hip and it does not look good. It’s a bit worrying, yeah.”

Newcastle medics will now closely assess and treat Gordon and head coach Eddie Howe will be desperately hoping the forward isn't facing any sort of lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Gordon is already set to miss Newcastle's next game against Brentford, on Wednesday, April 2, as he serves the final game of a three-match ban for his sending off in the FA Cup tie against Brighton.

But the former Everton winger was due to be able to return for the Magpies for the trip to Leicester on Monday, April 7. With Newcastle not having a game next weekend, Howe isn't due to next speak to the media until the day before the Brentford game.

Newcastle face a crucial spell of coming fixtures as they look to seal Champions League qualification for next season.

The Magpies are currently sixth but just five points separate fourth-placed Chelsea and Bournemouth in 10th.

Gordon was a 74th-minute substitute at Wembley on Friday, coming on to replace Marcus Rashford, who had started on the left-hand side.

The Magpies wide-man had barely touched the ball before he was involved in a challenge on the left touchline that left him wincing in pain as he clutched his hip.

He tried to carry on, but broke down again just before the final whistle when he fell to the floor in apparent distress.

He was being treated as the final whistle blew, and had to be helped to his feet by two members of England's medical staff.

He then hobbled down the tunnel while the rest of his team-mates celebrated in the centre-circle and acknowledged the England fans.
