There was late drama in Paul Simpson's first game with the Jamaica national team.

The Reggae Boyz, where ex-Carlisle United boss Simpson is now assistant coach, scored with the last kick of the game to earn a 1-1 draw with St Vincent & the Grenadines.

The Reggae Boyz, under head coach Steven McClaren, were heading towards defeat in the CONCACAF Gold Cup preliminary qualifying first leg.

They trailed from the 65th minute after Olex Anderson fired the hosts in front.

Simpson was active in the technical area as he tried to urge Jamaica back into the game.

And they salvaged a draw in the dying seconds when, in the seventh minute of added time, Warner Brown was fouled by Tristan Marshall in the box and Aston Villa's Leon Bailey converted the penalty.

The St Vincent & the Grenadines players protested to the officials as the penalty was awarded and after the game but Jamaica left with a draw and an away goal in the two-legged tie at the Arnos Vale Stadium.

The second leg is at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, on Tuesday.

It was Simpson's first game in the dugout since it was confirmed on Thursday that the former United boss had been appointed to assist his former Derby County and Newcastle United colleague McClaren with Jamaica.

The 58-year-old Cumbrian coach's role with the Reggae Boyz comes seven months after his second spell as Carlisle manager ended.

McClaren, speaking after the 1-1 draw, said: "I think we dominated the game and had 75 per cent possession.

"We had 15 opportunities, six on target, and the goalkeeper played well. I don't know how we didn't score [before we did].

"We know St Vincent work hard and are organised. They proved on transition that they're very effective. One mistake and we concede.

"I said there's no easy game in the Caribbean and this was not an easy game. The players know that. We got away with that one and we've got to make sure on Tuesday we don't allow those mistakes in transitions where they are very dangerous."

McClaren has drafted in Simpson to bolster his backroom team as Jamaica bid to reach the 2026 World Cup.
