Andi Weimann is hoping to be fit for pre-season after detailing the tough decision to undergo surgery which brought his season to an end.

Blackburn Rovers' top-scorer was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign after suffering a tear in his meniscus against Norwich City. Having scored a last-minute winner against the Canaries, it was a cruel blow for Weimann and the team.

The Austrian international feared there was damage done after the match. Having torn his ACL five years ago, that was his immediate worry, though that was quickly ruled out.

"It's football, to go from a massive high of scoring the goal in the last minute to having a scan the next day and finding I had a tear in my meniscus," Weimann told " target="_blank" class="link"> RoversTV.

"It brought me straight back down to earth. These things happen. I felt something during the game but I didn't really get the pain until after the game finished.

"I was hoping it wasn't anything more serious but I had a gut feeling I'd done something. You instantly worry about ACLs and those things but it was ruled out so that was a relief.

"I had a few options. I made the decision to have surgery. I was in the car driving home from the scan when the phone rang and I didn't want to answer.

"Once I knew it was my meniscus, I wasn't happy but I was relieved. I saw a specialist, I got my options and it's hard to assess that. What's best for me and my career and the club. I really wanted to play and help the boys but it was the right choice for me."

Weimann is hoping he will be available for pre-season after being ruled out for three months. Whether that is with Rovers is still to be determined with his contract up on June 30.

"I've found the last week a bit boring because I've had surgery and I can't do much other than sit around on the sofa," he continued.

"I'm frustrated I can't help the boys and have to watch from afar. The plan is three months so that'll help me to June which would be perfect for the start of pre-season. That's my aim."
