Liverpool is among a number of Europe’s elite clubs who are monitoring Jeremie Frimpong’s situation at Bayer Leverkusen.

With the end of the 2024/25 season now in sight, the Reds are preparing for what could be a busy transfer window and, with a growing expectation that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave when his contract expires, several possible additions at right-backs are being explored.

German outlet Sports Bild reported earlier this week that Frimpong and manager Arne Slot are in regular contact, with a €40 million ($44m/£34m) release clause in his contract. Fans also noticed how the defender greeted Ryan Gravenberch on international duty with a fake Scouse accent, saying ‘you alright lad?’.

Liverpool.com has since been informed the Reds’ interest in Frimpong is ‘genuine’ but an offer emerging will almost certainly be dependent on Alexander-Arnold departing the club at the end of the season.

Regardless, a well-placed source has told Liverpool.com it’s highly unlikely that the Dutch international will remain at Leverkusen beyond this summer with several of Europe’s top sides monitoring his situation. Indeed, should Real Madrid miss out on Alexander-Arnold, a move for Frimpong could materialize. Barcelona is also keen, as is Bayern Munich.

There is Premier League interest too, with Chelsea considering strengthening at right-back. It’s believed that Frimpong’s future will be dependent on the market, which opportunities arise and which clubs consider right-back a priority position.

But after playing a pivotal role at Leverkusen in recent years, including 47 appearances in last season’s league and cup double, a departure this summer feels inevitable. He has also missed just one match this campaign in all competitions and provided a goal and assist at the weekend as the German champions beat Stuttgart 4-3.

Frimpong joined Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021, having previously spent two seasons in Glasgow. The 24-year-old came through the youth ranks at Manchester City and admitted in an interview earlier this year his preference choice was to join Liverpool as a child.

An attacking full-back, Frimpong has tended to operate as a right wing-back in Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-3 system. That is not an approach favored by Slot, although the Leverkusen man is comfortable playing on the right of a back four.

Should he sign for Liverpool, his style would differ from Alexander-Arnold. Frimpong’s main qualities come from his speed, dribbling and direct approach.
