Manchester United’s supporters noisily insist Ruben Amorim will bring the glory days again and, finally, it does appear that this giant oil tanker is creaking into life.
The chant for Amorim echoed around King Power Stadium for long periods as United won consecutive league games for the first time this season, with Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho both ending their long waits for goals.
There have been so many brief moments of promise in this excruciating period of underachievement, yet Amorim can certainly look ahead with a degree of optimism.
After booking a place in the Europa League quarter-final, where they will face Lyon over two legs next month, United have also extended their unbeaten run to four matches in the domestic campaign.
There was also the welcome sight of Hojlund producing a ruthless finish, with his first goal since December 12 coming in front of Ruud van Nistelrooy, one of United’s legendary goalscorers of the Premier League era.
Amorim said: “It’s really important for Rasmus and he is doing the right things.
“It was a difficult goal with difficult control with his right foot. It’s a shame we have to stop for the national teams.
“The performances are improving and I am starting to see different things in the team. We are still so far away from what the fans expect and deserve.
“It’s a good sign for us and we are now going to use this window to rest and recover, that will be good for us.”
The only disappointment for United was a worrying injury for promising defender Ayden Heaven, who was taken off on a stretcher early in the second half.
While Amorim can sense signs of recovery in the grand rebuilding job, Van Nistelrooy is enduring a nightmare. Leicester have now lost 13 of the past 14 Premier League matches and are hurtling inexorably towards the Championship. To pile on the misery, they have also become the first club in English top-flight history to lose seven home matches in a row without scoring.
Van Nistelrooy has not seen one of his players score here since December 8, which puts Hojlund’s own personal drought into some context.
The Dutchman’s four-match unbeaten run at United in November must feel a lifetime ago. After the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, he briefly galvanised United’s season in an interim period which included two victories over Leicester.
If those games served as an audition for this assignment, it has proved more difficult than he could have imagined. He inherited an unbalanced, struggling squad and a club gripped in a malaise with a mutinous mood among the fanbase.
Frustration is still lingering over the relegation season in 2023, with many fans claiming that they could see warning signs about the club’s collapse long before it happened. The absence of a public review into that relegation further irritated supporters, while there have been fierce debates since over other issues such as season-ticket prices.
A banner was unfurled early on with the words “From dogs of war to doggy daycare”: a reference to centre-back Jannik Vestergaard who was recently given permission to bring his dog to the training ground.
While the presence of the dog has polarised opinion, it was more a damning indictment of the culture in the dressing room where players are seemingly unchallenged.
Results have only cranked up the tension and Leicester were again very underwhelming here.
United fired an early warning when Christian Eriksen crashed a shot against the post from just outside the penalty area in the 24th minute.
Four minutes later they were ahead, after a clinical finish from Hojlund that has been too rarely seen.
Bruno Fernandes found the forward in space and Hojlund advanced towards the area before driving his shot across Mads Hermansen into the corner. It was another glimpse of Hojlund’s undoubted potential, and Amorim will be hoping this serves as a timely boost for confidence.
What must Van Nistelrooy have been thinking? It was another exhibit of abysmal defending from Leicester, with Conor Coady surrendering possession, Boubakary Soumare failing to cut out Fernandes’ pass and Wout Faes inexplicably standing off Hojlund.
Even the boos at half-time from Leicester’s fans were half-hearted. Apathy is taking over.
United had been in relative control but their evening did sustain a setback when Heaven was taken off early in the second half. The defender was arguably United’s best performer but appeared to roll his ankle and was in clear discomfort.
Heaven’s departure did not unsettle United though, and Garnacho was denied the second goal after being adjudged offside by a Var review.
Van Nistelrooy introduced substitute Facundo Buonanotte in the 64th minute in a bid to give his team some desperately needed impetus. The Brighton loanee’s lack of starts under the new manager continues to bewilder supporters.
Yet it is Leicester’s defence which is the greater concern and in the 68th minute they were at fault again as United increased their lead.
This time there were no doubts over Garnacho’s goal, with the winger given far too much space to hook the ball into the corner, beating Hermansen at his near post. It was his first goal in 25 games, an even longer stretch than Hojlund.
Fernandes produced the final gloss with another emphatic finish a minute from the end.
This certainly felt like the end for Leicester. It does not promise to get any easier either, with games against Manchester City and Newcastle after the international break.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s reaction
The difference in quality showed in both boxes. Overall if you look at the metrics of the game there isn’t much in it. The difference is the efficiency. We had chances but it’s difficult when the ball doesn’t go in.
The players are giving everything and I can only praise them for that effort. The gap is nine points, which is big, but we can’t and won’t give up.

Ruben Amorim’s verdict
It was a good performance. There was a bit of a lack of energy but I think we deserved the win. We could have been better with the ball but I understand this after all the games we have had. It was a perfect way to end this week with a win for our away supporters – they are amazing.
[On Bruno Fernandes] The most important is the work that he puts into everything he does.
[On Rasmus Hojlund] It was a difficult chance. It’s a shame we are going to stop for the international break but he will return with confidence.
[On Ayden Heaven’s injury] I don’t know (how bad it is). We have to evaluate it during the week. And also, because he’s a young kid, he doesn’t know how to explain so that makes it a bit harder to know what he’s feeling.
For me, today was the most difficult game for him. He played so well against Sociedad and we expect young kids to relax a bit but he was so focussed and he played quite well. Let’s hope for the best.
It was clear today that the players are at the limit (physically). We will use the international break to recover.

Bruno Fernandes’s reaction
It was very important for us to get the job done today. In the first half we made a lot of mistakes – not in the build up but in transition. In the second half we were more in control of the game.
I think we are improving. You can see some progress but it has to continue because the upcoming games are very important.
[On Rasmus Hojlund’s goal] It’s always important for strikers to score – they need to feel important. I hope he doesn’t score for the next two weeks because he’s playing against me in the national team!
[On his own form] I just focus on doing the best I can for the team. Goals and assists are a big part of my game but the main thing is getting points and finishing the season as strongly as we can.
[On captaincy and criticism] It’s not nice to hear bad things about you but at the same time it motivates you. I know you are talking about Roy Keane. I’ve said before that I have huge respect for him: he’s one of the best captains the club has had and an amazing player. He won basically everything for this club. It’s the way he thinks, it’s the idea he has about me as a player and a captain. I have to respect that.
I do things in my own way to try to be the best... not captain but person and teammate as I can. I try to be an example in everything I do every day. But not everyone will like that or think in the same way. I accept there is a lot of margin for improvement in my leadership, in my game, even in my own life.

FT: Leicester 0 Man Utd 3
Manchester United’s mini-revival continues with a comfortable win at the King Power Stadium. Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho ended their goal droughts before Bruno Fernandes continued his outstanding form with a storming finish.
It’s a bittersweet victory for United, however. After a highly impressive first-half performance, the teenage defender Ayden Heaven was stretchered off shortly after the break with what looked a very serious injury.
Leicester, unsurprisingly, looked bereft of confidence and have set an unwelcome record: they are the first side in English top-flight history to lose seven consecutive home games without scoring.

Good save by Onana! Vardy, put through on goal by Winks, smashes a shot is that is blocked by the outstretched arm of Onana. That’s a really good reaction save.

It won’t be shown on the TV coverage but Diogo Dalot was celebrating wildly in front of the United fans when that Bruno goal went in. He was very patient, waiting on that right flank for the ball to be switched. His cut-back was finished off brilliantly by Bruno. The officials adding eight minutes of added time to this game is a scandal. It’s all over and the only danger is to players’ safety if they pick up a late injury.

There will be eight minutes of added time because of the injury to Ayden Heaven. Leicester have brought on Jordan Ayew for Bilal El Khannouss.

Goal!
90 min: Leicester 0 Man Utd 3 (Fernandes) Bruno Fernandes caps things off with yet another stunning goal. Dalot broke down the right and arrowed a low cross back towards Fernandes, lurking with enormous intent in the D. He watched the ball onto his right foot and whipped a glorious first-time shot into the far corner. Fernandes’s technique, yet again, was flawless. His one-touch finishing from 15-20 yards is so good.

United fans have given a rendition of their Ruben Amorim chant for several minutes - and they are still going. To the tune of It’s A Heartache by Bonnie Tyler, the words are: “Ruben Amorim, he’ll bring the glory days again. We’ll back him from the Stretford End! He’ll turn the reds around!” This contest is over. If it was a boxing match, the ref would have waved his hands by now.

It is a stunning statistic that Manchester United have failed to win back-to-back Premier League matches this season. That is why they are in the bottom half of the table. But there are signs that Ruben Amorim’s work is starting to take shape. Their last defeat in 90 minutes was a month ago and the win over Real Sociedad in midweek was convincing. Along with the draw against Arsenal, it has been a decent lead up into the international break - presuming they hold onto their lead here.

Goal!
67 min: Leicester 0 Man Utd 2 (Garnacho) This time Alejandro Garnacho can celebrate for real. Fernandes, on the edge of the area, poked a loose ball towards Garnacho, whose fast shot on the turn went through the left hand of Hermansen at the near post. I think Garnacho took him by surprise with the suddenness of the shot. It’s his first goal since November.

Man Utd substitution Toby Collyer replaces poor Ayden Heaven. Collyer normally plays in midfield so this will mean a defensive reshuffle: Mazraoui to left centre-back, Collyer to right wing-back.

Heaven to be stretchered off This is so sad. The week of Ayden Heaven’s life has ended with him suffering a nasty ankle injury - so bad, apparently, that Sky Sports aren’t showing any replays.

A promising attack from Leicester. Soumare finds Vardy on the left side of the area; he angles a low cross that Daka meets beyond the far post. He doesn’t make proper contact, under pressure from Heaven, and screws well wide.
Daka got in an accidental tangle of legs with Heaven, who is down and looks in a fair bit of pain.

Leicester get the second half under way.
07:51 PM GMT
Half-time verdict
There were a few boos at half-time from Leicester fans - but the general feeling is resignation at their relegation fate. There is very little on the pitch or bench to turn this game around - you would have to send on Facundo Buonanotte as a wildcard for the second half. So then you are looking at nine games to go and even if they got on a run and won four of them, that will still not be enough. Last season 27 points would have survived and Leicester are currently 10 points off that.

Manchester United lead through a drought-ending goal from Rasmus Hojlund, finished clinically from Bruno Fernandes’s lofted pass. That was 21 matches without a goal before Rasmus Hojlund found the net. During that run, you felt for him. His team-mates struggle to find him and his confidence takes a battering. Physically he has taken a battering too - Conor Coady put in a reducer on him early on here. But he has seized on that slip by Boubakary Soumare and held his nerve to get a shot away. He has been in those positions before and not pulled the trigger.
07:28 PM GMT
Goal!
28 min: Leicester 0 Man Utd 1 (Hojlund) Rasmus Hojlund ends his goal drought with a clinical finish! It was made inevitably by Fernandes, who saw Hojlund make a good off-the-ball run and flipped a typical pass over the Leicester defence. Hojlund moved into the area, away from the covering Faes, and drove decisively into the far corner with his right foot. It’s his first goal of 2025.

Eriksen hits the post! What a magnificent effort. He took the corner short to Fernandes, got it back on the left corner of the area and curled a booming shot across goal that beat Hermansen and clattered off the inside of the post.

In a nod to Sam Wallace’s coverage of a Leicester player bringing his dog to training, fans have unfurled a banner reading ‘From dogs of war, to doggy daycare’. They are not happy with the leadership at the top of the club, with much of the anger aimed at director of football Jon Rudkin.
Meanwhile, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggested that he would quit if the fan abuse got as bad as it is for the Glazer family. Good evening
Hello and welcome to live, minute-by-minute coverage of Leicester v Manchester United in the Premier League. It’s a bit of stretch to say that things are looking up for United, given they are 15th in the table, but they have had a very good week on the field. An honourable draw at home to Arsenal was followed by a stirring 4-1 hammering of Real Sociedad in the Europa League, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick to enhance his reputation as the Bryan Robson de nos jours.
“We are better understanding the plan for the games,” said Ruben Amorim of United’s steadily improving performances. “We are giving the team more time to win and to draw the games. We are not suffering one goal and then losing our minds by suffering another goal. We are understanding the moments of the game and also we are understanding better the way we want to play.”
United will be expected to beat Leicester, who have lost 12 of their last 13 Premier League games and look set for an immediate return to the Championship. “Forget the table and face Leicester like we did against Real Sociedad,” said Amorim. “We just need to win and improve our position in the table and the most important thing is to continue this feeling of winning and that we are improving as a team.”
This is close to a must-win game for Leicester, who are nine points off safety with tonight’s match in hand. Their coach Ruud van Nistelrooy switched to a back three for their last game, a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, and plans to stick with the new system.
“We had some very good performances without results. But after Everton, Brentford and West Ham, games where the performances were not as they should have been, when we conceded too many goals, after that, it was time to change something.”
Now they just need to change their results.
Kick off 7pm.
