As Enzo Maresca battles to convince Chelsea fans that his style of play is the right way, this victory over Copenhagen was hardly a ringing endorsement for his approach.

Just like against Leicester last weekend, when Maresca called out Chelsea supporters, this was another 1-0 victory.

It booked the Blues a spot in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League and, in seeing off Copenhagen 3-1 on aggregate, they have probably beaten their toughest opponents en route to a possible final.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the only goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half. It was a moment of quality in an otherwise drab affair.

In the first half, Chelsea failed to muster a single shot on goal and it is why there was a few boos at the break.

Fans at Stamford Bridge have become frustrated by Maresca’s possession-based and controlling philosophy that has usurped Chelsea’s early-season identity as a dynamic and counter-attacking team.

Maresca, however, is seemingly not for changing - as his comments after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Leicester suggested.

“If you think that football is just a PlayStation and you win easy, no way,” he said. “Every game is difficult.

“The people, they have to understand that this is our way, our style and this is the way we’re going to play.”

Thank goodness, in that case, for Cole Palmer - whose introduction at half time sparked some life into Chelsea.

Palmer may not have ended his goal drought, which now stands at 10 games, but he was his side’s most creative player.

Within minutes of coming on, his cross was put just wide by Trevoh Chalobah as Chelsea registered their first shot on target.

Palmer went close to scoring himself and he seemed certain to score right at the end, but a tame effort was easily dealt with by Copenhagen goalkeeper Diant Ramaj.

Perhaps a trip to Arsenal on Sunday will be when Palmer ends his barren run. Certainly on this evidence, the Blues need him to sparkle if they are to secure all three points at Emirates Stadium.

Before he was introduced, here, their attack looked lifeless and it was Copenhagen who were the most threatening in the first half. Rodrigo Huescas went closest and Josh Acheampong made a good block to deny him.

Chelsea’s only real threat came from Tyrique George, who drove the ball well down the right flank but will little end product. Pedro Neto had a small shout for a penalty waved away and a Jadon Sancho mazy run came to nothing.

Palmer gave some stardust to that attack but, even so, it was hardly the swashbuckling, dynamic and counter-attacking Chelsea fans seem to want.

Maresca will argue, however, that while results keep going his way, then his methods are vindicated.
