Manchester United will be hoping to keep their Europa League dream alive when they welcome Real Sociedad to Old Trafford in the second leg of their last-16 tie this evening.

The tie is evenly balanced at 1-1 following last week's first leg in San Sebastián, meaning everything is still all to play for. United took the lead through Joshua Zirkzee but soon saw his effort wiped out through a penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal.

With their Premier League campaign long since dead in the water and their participation in both domestic cup competitions over for another season, the Europa League offers United their last chance to salvage something from what has otherwise been a forgettable campaign.

Here are five things to look out for at Old Trafford tonight;

Do or die time

Tonight's game is the biggest of United's campaign by some distance. Their domestic season is as good as over, meaning the Europa League offers them one last chance to make amends.

The beauty of winning the Europa League is that as part of the prize is a place in the following season's Champions League. United are not going to qualify for Europe's marquee club competition via their Premier League finish, meaning the Europa League is about much more than just adding to their trophy cabinet.

"It gives us more energy to continue the season," head coach Ruben Amorim said of the Europa League yesterday. "We know that.

"It is not going to change a lot the idea for the next season, but it will give us more energy to finish the season in a different way."

If United do not get the job done this evening, their season risks fizzling out very, very quickly.

More defensive upheaval

There are seemingly three guarantees in life; death, taxes and Amorim having to make changes to his defence. With Leny Yoro unavailable through injury this evening, likewise Harry Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui is expected to move into the back-three.

The Moroccan is one of the most versatile members of the squad and has played in a variety of positions this season. It is highly likely he will operate on the right of the back-three tonight, joining forces with Matthijs de Ligt and Victor Lindelof, who is likely to keep his place and bag a second successive start.

If Amorim elects to deploy a back-three of Mazraoui, De Ligt and Lindelof, it will be the first time they have started together as a defensive trio. Lindelof has only made five starts this season.

Elsewhere, Patrick Dorgu is available for selection amid his ongoing domestic ban, and he should start at left wing-back to offer the team some much-needed balance. Diogo Dalot should start from the right.

Sociedad have history at Old Trafford

United go into tonight's game boasting a very impressive record in the Europa League at Old Trafford having lost just one of their last 28 home matches in the competition. However, that one defeat, you guessed it, was against Sociedad.

The Spanish side were triumphant at Old Trafford on matchday one of the 2022/23 Europa League group stage, securing a 1-0 win via a second half penalty from Brais Mendez. The contest was played in a sombre atmosphere that evening following the death of Queen Elizabeth II a few hours earlier.

The atmosphere will be a lot more vibrant this evening and United's supporters will need to play their part if their team is to advance to the quarter-finals and book a date with either Lyon or FCSB. However, the fact Sociedad were the last side to beat United on home soil in the Europa League could increase tensions and nerves among some supporters.

Furthermore, the last time United lost a Europa League knockout game at Old Trafford was against Athletic Bilbao at the round-of-16 stage in 2012.

Who leads the attack?

Amorim is hardly blessed when it comes to attacking options at the moment. But after Rasmus Hojlund started Sunday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal on the bench, he will be itching to reclaim his place.

He came off the bench against the Gunners in the second half and was unable to net the second goal United so desperately craved, meaning he has gone 20 games without scoring. However, Joshua Zirkzee did not look comfortable operating as the No.9 on Sunday and should be pushed back into either of the two No.10 positions.

Amorim said ahead of last week's first leg against Sociedad that the Europa League could give Hojlund the platform he needs to get back on track. He has five goals in the competition so far this term and a sixth is long overdue.

Casemiro call

With Manuel Ugarte in contention to return from injury this evening, it will be interesting to see if he is thrown straight back into the starting XI or is tasked with starting on the subs bench. He has missed the last two games, meaning that Casemiro has deputised.

To the Brazilian's credit, he was one of United's best players in the first leg in San Sebastián last week, producing a very authoritative performance. The slower tempo of the game helped him, in comparison to the cut and thrust of the Premier League.

For all the criticism he has faced this season, he is still an exceptional player with bags of experience. Amorim has a big call to make on him amid Ugarte's impending return.
