During Match of the Day Wayne Rooney shared that he believes in Rasmus Hojlund despite a lack of goal contributions this season: “I’ve got faith in him. I think he is a good player and he works hard - I think he just needs that goal and once he gets it, they’ll all start coming," said the United great.
The pressure that comes with being a striker at a club with United’s history cannot be understated and the pressure rises when you take into account that £72m price tag.
Hojlund has two goals in his last 23 appearances, which is an indicator of widespread struggles across a Manchester United squad who sit 14th in the Premier League.

Rooney also raised the importance of the rest of the squad when it comes to goal contributions saying, “Nine times out of 10 you’re relying on your team-mates to give you chances and put the ball in the box or slide balls in behind, maybe he hasn’t been doing that - he hasn’t been getting that service as of late.”
A disappointing season is being highlighted by their star striker being almost invisible when you look at the statistics. Goal contributions signify the state of play within a team and Hojlund’s lack of impact is being felt.
United's style of play has changed under Ruben Amorim but the results speak for themselves. Any excitement that Amorim could get more from Hojlund has disappeared very quickly.
In January Amorim stated he felt the lack of goals from the forward were “more of a team problem than a Rasmus problem,” which becomes even more worrying given the Dane hasn't scored since.
A vote of confidence from a player like Rooney suggests Hojlund has the ability to improve, but something has to change. And quickly.
