Up and down the country, football clubs have come together this weekend to pay tribute to a young girl who died earlier this week.

Poppy Atkinson was killed when a car crashed on to the sports pitch at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club on Shap Road on Wednesday March 5.

The 10-year-old was described by her family as a ‘beautiful’ girl who loved football.

To pay their respects, football clubs across the UK observed a minute of silence.

The tribute was started by Team Grassroots, a football organisation in South Shields, and quickly spread nationwide.

Dozens of teams and county football associations pledged to take part, from Leeds to London, Bolton to Brighton.

Two of Poppy’s hometown teams, Kendal County Football Club, and Kendal Town Football Club, both took a moment to remember the aspiring sports star.

Kendal County saved a minute for Poppy ahead of their West Lancashire League Division One game against Carnforth Rangers at the Parkside Road ground in Kendal on Saturday.

Shildon AFC, was hosting Kendal Town, and paid their respects with both teams observing the silence before kick off in the their Northern League Division One clash.

A minute of silence was observed ahead of The Westmorland County FA Junior Cup semi-finals between Hest Bank United and Greystoke First, and Ullswater United First vs Ingleton First.

Barrow AFC also held a minute's silence to remember Poppy, ahead of facing off against Accrington Stanley at home, with the players wearing black armbands as a sign of respect.

The morning saw legions of junior and amateur teams observing similar gestures.

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but he has since been released as investigations continue.

An eight-year-old girl was also injured in the incident but is expected to recover.
