Joshua Zirkzee believes Manchester United should be "disappointed" to have drawn 1-1 against Real Sociedad after taking the lead and looking comfortable against Spaniards.

Although the game was goalless at half-time, Ruben Amorim would have been pleased with United's performance as they controlled the contest and limited Real Sociedad.

United finally found a breakthrough in the 58th minute through Zirkzee. The Dutchman calmly found the net with a low strike from the edge of the box after a pull-back from Alejandro Garnacho and United were on course to claim an important win away from home in Europe.

However, Sociedad were awarded a penalty after a handball from Bruno Fernandes and their captain, Mikel Oyarzabal, sent Andre Onana the wrong way from the spot.

United looked tired in the final 10 minutes at the Reale Arena and the game ended in a 1-1 draw, which tees up an interesting second leg between the two sides at Old Trafford next week.

Zirkzee looked frustrated during his post-match interview with MUTV and he admitted United should be disappointed with the result. "I think disappointed, I think after they get the penalty, the game changes and we lose control. We didn't play the same way we did before the penalty," he said.

"In the end, you can say 1-1 is fine and they have to come to our stadium, but I think we should feel a bit disappointed. We had the opportunities to create more chances and we created some chances, so the ball just has to go into the net and that's what will help us. They get the penalty and it was unlucky.

"You just want to win the game. The goal was a relief, it's what the team needed, so it was a great feeling. They're a great team footballing-wise, even today they were great."

United return to Premier League action against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon and they will take on Sociedad at Old Trafford in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16 next week.

Zirkzee's goal against Sociedad means he now has six goals in all competitions this season.
