The referee's microphone has picked up frustrations from a Cardiff player after Leinster were awarded a controversial try.

Cardiff were beaten 42-24 by Leinster eventually, but at one point as the game was drawing to a close, just 11 points separated the teams with the Welsh region mounting something of a comeback after back-to-back tries.

Replacement Rob Russell dived into the corner to take the game beyond doubt on 76 minutes, and while it seemed like a clinical airborne finish, a lengthy TMO review ensued with prop Danny Southworth seemingly forcing Russell into touch with his tackle.

However, the TMO and referee Andrea Pirardi couldn't find compelling evidence that the try should be disallowed and stuck with the on-field decision, with Leinster getting the extras and establishing an 18-point lead.

Cardiff players were not convinced by the replays shown and voiced their opinion to Pirardi, which was caught on his mic.

"That was never a try that, never a try," protested one Cardiff player. "Maybe you're right," said Pirardi. "Maybe you can become a TMO."

Cardiff welcomed back just one Wales international for this match, with Ellis Bevan appearing on 62 minutes for Johan Mulder. Bevan will link up with the rest of the Wales squad on Monday ahead of the Six Nations match against Scotland on Saturday, March 8.

Following Ospreys' last-gasp win over Glasgow Warriors over the weekend, Leinster have extended their lead to 13 points at the top of the URC table. Cardiff are in sixth place, just three points adrift of Sharks in fourth. Scarlets and Ospreys are locked in at 10th and 11th, both on 28 points, with Dragons rock bottom.

That all-important bonus point earned by Cardiff puts them further ahead of Scarlets in the Welsh shield. The capital city region are top with 18 points.
