England have been eliminated from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at the group stage after back-to-back defeats in Pakistan.
Jos Buttler’s struggling side fell just short in a dramatic run chase against Afghanistan in Lahore on Wednesday, having been bested by Australia in a record-breaking opener over the weekend.
A miserable white-ball tour of India saw England lose seven of their eight matches across the two formats, leading to questions over how well, and how much, the squad had trained under Brendon McCullum.
A washout in Australia’s match with South Africa meant England would be heading home unless they beat Afghanistan and South Africa in their final two group-stage matches.
Pakistan are hosting the tournament, though India’s matches are being played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after they announced that they would not travel to Pakistan. The two sides played each other on Sunday, with Virat Kohli inspiring India to a six-wicket triumph.
This is the first edition of the Champions Trophy since 2017, when Pakistan lifted the trophy after beating India in the final at the Oval.
