Crewe Alexandra boss Lee Bell was pleased to see Connor O’Riordan score the first goal of his second spell with the club.

The young defender returned to Gresty Road on loan last month after spending the first half of the campaign at Cambridge a division higher.

O’Riordan got the opener as Crewe beat Barrow 3-0, reacting quickest to slot home from close range after Jack Powell’s free kick was pushed out.

Tommy Lowery, another player who started out with the Railwaymen and returned on loan in January, scored the second from the penalty spot and Matus Holicek wrapped up the result five minutes from time.

Bell was pleased to see the two loanees get on the scoresheet and the celebrations with supporters which followed.

“You can see (what it meant) and I think it is because of how well people get treated when they are at the football club,” he " target="_blank" class="link"> told the club channels.

“We all have their best interests at heart and the players appreciate that when they get the opportunity to come back. I think it means a lot to them and I’m delighted for those two to score goals.”

Bell added: “I thought it was a really good performance. We asked the players to come up with a team performance and within that, there should be good individual performances.

“I didn’t think anyone was carried, they all played somewhere near so I am delighted for the players and staff.

“We have been working really hard over this little period we are going through and in the end I thought we were just winners.”

Crewe had gone six games without victory in League Two prior to their clash with Barrow. Bell’s side now sit seventh in the table as they battle to finish in the play-off places, although they have played an extra game than the sides around them.

O’Riordan has made seven appearances since his return to Cheshire and could be involved again this weekend when they head to Chesterfield.

However, his Rovers team-mate, Leo Duru, was absent from the Barrow squad at Gresty Road.

The right-back, who made three senior appearances at Ewood Park earlier this season, has played five times since heading to Holker Street last month.

Elsewhere, Dilan Markanday came off the bench for the final stages as Leyton Orient lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers over the weekend.

Markanday had impressed on loan at Chesterfield during the first half of the campaign, finding the back of the net seven times.

The 23-year-old had a promising start to his time at Brisbane Road, scoring in the victories against Reading and Exeter.

He was an unused substitute against Manchester City in the FA Cup, which Orient led at half time before City hit back through Abdoukodir Khusanov and Kevin de Bruyne.

Last week, head coach " target="_blank" class="link"> Richie Wellens said: “The squad is good. You only have to look at the likes of Dilan Markanday, he has been unbelievable since he came in.

“It has been difficult to get him on in the last couple of games because of the physicality of the opposition and the way the games were going.

“You look at Lincoln and Wrexham – every time the ball goes out of play, it is in your box. Every time it is a long throw, a corner, you need to match them up size-wise. It has been difficult for Dilan but his time will come.”

Orient face a tough test tonight against leaders Birmingham, who are six points clear at the top and have only lost twice in the league.

Another interesting clash tonight sees Tranmere host Accrington Stanley in a big clash near the bottom of the League Two table.

Jake Garrett, who spent the first half of the campaign at Bristol Rovers, has played five times for Tranmere since heading to Preston Park.

There is just two points and one place in the table separating the Merseyside outfit and Stanley heading into the fixture, although the latter have a game in hand.

Rovers team-mate Jake Batty is on loan at the Wham Stadium but has missed the past couple of games after he was forced off early in the second half of the defeat at Bradford.
