Former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth has reportedly landed a new role with Warwickshire County Cricket Club - less than three months after leaving Old Trafford.

The 53-year-old lasted less than six months at Old Trafford after officially beginning his role on July 1 after United had agreed a compensation package with Newcastle United. However, the former Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion director left United by "mutual consent" in December, with United struggling both on and off the pitch this season.

But now The Times claims that Ashworth has returned to work in a consultancy role with Warwickshire County Cricket Club. It is claimed that Ashworth will work in a freelance role and advise "on a range of matters including high performance".

Ashworth has previously worked with Warwickshire, having joined their audit committee in 2021. Earlier this month, it was claimed that Ashworth's five-month stint at United cost the club in excess of £4m, with that figure covering the compensation package paid to Newcastle and the pay-off the 53-year-old received when he left his role.

The Daily Mail claimed that United's decision to sack Ashworth came when they realised his football knowledge was not what they had hoped for when they prised him away from Newcastle United earlier in the year. The report added that the club failed to do enough due diligence on the 53-year-old, with Ratcliffe keen to bring in 'British expertise', rather than the 'very UK-focused' perspective Ashworth offered.

Suggestions for replacements for Erik ten Hag were also an issue, with them viewed as 'too conservative'. Ashworth also did a presentation on the state of the football club, which was seen as 'heavy on negatives and light on solutions'.
