Gillingham boss John Coleman says his side’s failure to be awarded a penalty at Carlisle United shows they are “cursed”.

Coleman was convinced the visitors should have been awarded a spot-kick in the second half of the 0-0 draw at Brunton Park.

But ref Scott Jackson waved away appeals after Elliot Nevitt went down under Gabe Breeze’s challenge.

Gillingham failed to win for the 12th consecutive League Two game as the game ended in stalemate against the bottom-placed Blues.

Coleman lamented the penalty decision whilst paying tribute to the 402 travelling fans.

“The support was very much appreciated by both the staff and the players,” said Coleman. “We’re just desperate to get that win for them.

“It feels as though we’re cursed. On any other given day, it’s not even an issue.

“You’ve seen it, the Elliott Nevitt pen. I can’t start calling refs, that’s not the right thing to do. We’ve got to focus on what we can do.

“But we’re having absolutely zero luck. Well, we are, we’re having lots of luck – bad luck.”

Gillingham have yet to win since Coleman replaced Mark Bonner in early January. The Kent outfit, after three straight draws, sit 19th, nine points above the relegation zone and 12 above the Blues.

Coleman said his side’s resilience in the face of Carlisle’s spells of pressure was creditable.

“We’ll get there. We’ll keep on working hard,” he said. “You can see the spirit in the camp, with the lads – Dacky [Bradley Dack] throwing his body in front of a shot in the 93rd minute, that tells you everything you need to know.

“There was Nev [Nevitt] and Galey [Sam Gale] throwing themselves at one in the first half…

“We’ll keep on working and our luck’s got to change soon.”
