Despite the size of Manchester United's squad being trimmed in the January transfer window, it is still not a straightforward task to name their strongest XI.

In addition to letting a plethora of youngsters head out on loan last month, United also allowed Tyrell Malacia, Marcus Rashford and Antony to leave on temporary deals for the remainder of the season.

As a result of Rashford and Antony moving to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, United are now thin on numbers in attack. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are their only centre-forward options and Alejandro Garnacho and Amad are their only wide options.

Amid Amorim's rotation policy and United's lack of consistency in results and performances, there has been no such thing as a settled XI since the former Sporting Lisbon boss arrived at the club in November. Injury issues have also not helped.

But despite the size of United's squad being reduced, particularly in the attacking department, Amorim is no closer to a settled front-three. He is regularly tinkering and that is reflected in naming six different attacking combinations in the last six games.

The only real theme of continuity during that period has seen Amad start as the right-sided No.10 in four of those six matches. In the left-sided No.10 berth, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho have all started at some point over the last six games, with Garnacho starting in that role in three of the last five. Fernandes last started in the 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on January 19.

As a result, Fernandes has taken up residency in midfield in recent weeks, starting each of the last five games as one of the two No.8s. At times, it has meant he has traded places with Mainoo, who has also experienced playing as the left-sided No.10.

He started in that position against FCSB a fortnight ago and against Leicester City in the FA Cup last Friday night. He also experienced leading the line in the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in an experiment that failed to pay off.

With Manuel Ugarte a cornerstone in midfield, it leaves just one central-midfield berth up for grabs in Amorim's first-choice starting XI, and Fernandes and Mainoo are in direct competition for it. Fernandes has previously admitted that he can see himself morphing into a deep-lying midfielder as his career progresses.

Based on recent matches, Amorim's thinking appears to match Fernandes' opinion. That has resulted in Mainoo starting higher up the pitch, either at centre-forward or as the left-sided No.10.

However, Garnacho's presence throws a spanner in the works. He is equally worthy of a starting berth, and his recent performances off the bench against FCSB and Leicester highlighted just how important he is to this team.

It has taken time for him to adjust to a winger-less system, finding himself operating closer to the central striker, but his recent cameo performances have shown just how crucial he is to United's ambitions of becoming more fluid in attack. He has the quality to unlock defences and take games by the scruff of the neck.

With the Argentine, Mainoo and Fernandes seemingly squabbling for two places in Amorims first-choice starting XI, the United boss has a genuine selection dilemma to contend with - but it is one he should be grateful for.

The only way he may be able to start all three of them is by sacrificing either Zirkzee or Hojlund, pushing Fernandes into the centre of the front-three and deploying Mainoo back in midfield, with Garnacho operating from the left.
