Tottenham prepared for their crunch Europa League decider against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday with an abject 4-2 defeat at fellow strugglers Wolves.
Wolves broke the deadlock inside two minutes, Rayan Ait-Nouri volleying home from the edge of the box after Guglielmo Vicario had failed to deal with a free-kick.
The Spurs goalkeeper was also at fault for their second goal, parrying a cross into Djed Spence for an own goal by the full-back before the break.
Mathys Tel and substitute Richarlison pulled back goals for Spurs in the second half but on both occasions they quickly conceded again, Jorgen Strand Larsen capitalising on Cristian Romero’s error and Matheus Cunha dispossessing Lucas Bergvall to run clear and score.
Here’s how we rated the Spurs players...
Guglielmo Vicario 3
At fault for Wolves’ first two goals after flapping at crosses and looked nervous with the ball at his feet.
Archie Gray 5
Looked like a young player out of position.
Cristian Romero 3
Cost Spurs a third goal with a howler and lacked focus and discipline all afternoon.
Ben Davies 4
Looked like an older player out of position, and could not get to Cunha for goal No4.
Djed Spence 5
Positive but he ran down too many blind alleys. Hard to fault him for the own goal, which was more about Vicario’s nerves.
Yves Bissouma 4
Made it past half-time on this occasion but still poor. Full of loose touches and wayward passes, but drew a one-handed save from Jose Sa in the closest Spurs came in the first half.
Pape Matar Sarr 5
Gave away the early free-kick leading to the opening goal and failed to make any impression on the match.
James Maddison 6
To be fair, he tried to make things happen and was the only creative spark until Bergvall’s introduction.
Brennan Johnson 5
Made Tel’s goal with a far-post cross in one of his few positive contributions.
Mathys Tel 5
Appeared to know little about his goal but nonetheless has now scored in back-to-back league games.
Dominic Solanke 4
Worked hard but lack service and never looked like scoring. A familiar story.
Subs
Lucas Bergvall (Sarr 55’) 5
Drove forward to create Spurs’ first goal but at fault for Wolves’ fourth after sloppily losing possession to Cunha.
Rodrigo Bentancur (Bissouma 55’) 5
Guilty of some loose touches.
Dejan Kulusevski (Maddison 75’) 6
Worked hard and now potentially in line to start against Frankfurt.
Richarlison (Solanke 75’) 6
Scored a confidence-boosting goal and is likely to be needed from the bench mid-week.
Not used: Kinsky, Porro, van de Ven, Udogie, Moore.
