André Onana has been rested by Ruben Amorim for Manchester United’s trip to Newcastle on Sunday, after the No 1 was culpable for both goals in Thursday’s 2-2 Europa League draw at Lyon.

While Altay Bayindir is set to make his Premier League debut at St James’ Park, the 29-year-old is likely to be recalled for Thursday’s quarter-final, second leg at Old Trafford, the Guardian understands. Onana was left behind when United travelled to Tyneside on Saturday.

On Thursday at the Groupama Stadium, Onana allowed Thiago Almada’s first-half free-kick to go straight in. Then, in the final minute of added time, he steered Corentin Tolisso’s shot straight to Rayan Cherki, who scored.

Although immediately after the match Amorim offered Onana a vote of confidence, the United head coach believes being taken out the line of fire will be of benefit after the errors and recent off-the-field difficulties.

Onana’s wife was the victim of a violent street robbery that left the family needing 24-hour protection. Melanie Kamayou was targeted by a thief who stole a Hermès bag, thought to be worth £62,000, and a Rolex watch as she left her car to meet a friend for dinner in Alderley Edge in late March.

Onana has continued to play for United despite this but has been scrutinised for his display in Lyon after a spat with the former United player Nemanja Matic before the game. The Lyon midfielder branded him one of the worst keepers in United’s history after Onana had claimed Amorim’s side were “way better” than their French opponents. Onana hit back by pointing out that, unlike Matic during his five years at the club, he had won trophies at United.

Bayindir returned to the squad at Nottingham Forest this month after a nine-match absence through injury. All seven of the Turk’s previous appearances have been in the domestic cup competitions and the Europa League, but he is now expected to make his Premier League debut at Newcastle.
