AN HISTORIC Bolton cricket club is attracting more young players than ever - particularly girls.
In fact, Blackrod Cricket Club has around 100 youngsters including a new under-13s girls’ section.
So successful has the family club become that it has just launched a fundraising campaign to buy new practice nets, artificial wickets and extended run-ups.
It also wants to invest in specialist training programmes so junior players receive the best training experience possible.
Duncan McNally, under-13s team manager, explained: “Last season was one of the wettest I’ve ever experienced at the club.
“Having to call off junior training and matches due to waterlogged pitches was so frustrating and it had a big impact on the kids who love nothing more than playing with their team-mates.
“We desperately need to invest in facilities that are resilient to poor weather conditions and fit for the future as our junior sections grow and expand.”
The club was founded around 1900 and has become the cornerstone of the local community with a rich history in nurturing cricketing talent.
It is dedicated to promoting the sport at all levels and has around 50 adult playing members across three teams, as well as junior mixed and girls’ teams.
As Sarah Skinner, a female cricket coach and mum to 11 year-old player Hannah, stated: “The girls love playing and being part of a team.
“It’s wonderful to watch their confidence and friendships develop alongside their skills and experience.”
People are already getting behind the appeal and, added Sarah: “We will definitely start the cricket season with new nets.”
McNally added: “Every donation - no matter how big or small - helps us make a difference.
“This is more than just cricket; it’s about creating a legacy for future generations and we want as many people as possible to be part of it.”
