Just when the modern Manchester United believed they had experienced all the most exquisitely painful ways to lose a game so they were felled by one of their own, and a goal from Anthony Elanga to stand comparison with the finest ever scored against the once dominant club of English football.
The unbeaten run of Ruben Amorim’s team stretching back previously seven games to February 22 is over. The clouds gather anew. But it was the manner of its ending, and the man who delivered it that was the most jarring for United. Not just the United of April 2025 but the United of the last 12 years and all its many mistakes. They signed Elanga as a 12-year-old in 2014, the Swedish son of a former Cameroon international whose family had moved to Greater Manchester. They finessed him into a Premier League footballer and an international and then, in the tumult of another summer of change in 2023, they sold him for £13.5 million to a club that United never supposed would be a threat to them.
That club, Nottingham Forest, now look well-placed in third for the Champions League next season. United are 13th. Forest play the kind of style preferred by their manager Nuno Espirito Santo, where possession is an optional extra, but between the two teams, Elanga was the most exciting attacker by some distance. By the end, with the game stretched, United’s players were reduced to clipping his arm and sneaking fouls to stop the counterattack. His pace is mind-boggling and perhaps that was all United thought he had when they sold him – but even if it was, on this night it was the difference between the two teams.
Of course, Amorim’s players had lots more of the ball. They had many more shots and in Bruno Fernandes they had the most accomplished player on the pitch – but even he was not able to lift the mediocrity of this team. Amorim had started without Rasmus Hojlund but brought him on at half-time. He tried to put his faith in Joshua Zirkzee but by the end, as United chased the equaliser, the Dutchman was also summoned to the bench after an ineffective evening. So many of United’s big-ticket signings – Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorgu – they were all underwhelming. By contrast, Nuno got another fine performance from his players.
Of course, Elanga was the great attraction but there was also a splendid evening for the local boy and captain Ryan Yates. His block on an Alejandro Garnacho shot in the second half was crucial. By the end Forest were hanging on to the lead given to them by Elanga in the fifth minute. But they did so.

Amorim on throwing on Maguire
If you look at the game in the final 15 minutes they were defending with six men in the box so we had to get more players in there. We cannot get inside the box with the combinations.
Harry Maguire is really strong on set pieces and when you are in the opposite box you are a striker not a defender. He is maybe the best guy to play inside the box.
10:46 PM BST
Nuno on his first-half tactical change
Look, I think the game was going away from us, we were not able to control and United were given too many situations.
We decided on the injury [to Ola Aina] to go to a back five and Morato could give a hand. That was the reason behind it.
10:39 PM BST
Nuno’s post-match thoughts
Suffer! Heart, belief, helping each other, the clearance off the line. It was a hard, hard game for us.
He’s a special boy [Elanga] and his speed and control of the ball, he just does things by himself.
A lad from the club, club captain, he is the heart of the time [Yates].
Today the City Ground was part of the game, because we were against the ropes, there is no need to hide it after a long, long game on Saturday.
10:36 PM BST
Could there be more such sales this summer?
People will debate the rights/wrongs of #MUFC selling academy grads like Elanga, McTominay, Henderson, Welbeck etc. One of the more pertinent issues is that the players brought in to replace those kinds of players have invariably not been improvements & in some cases downgrades

Amorim on the importance of the first goal vs Forest
I think we controlled the game but we already knew this team can score goals out of nothing. When they score, it changes the game to what they want. We tried, but with the last pass, the last cross, the last cross we could not do it. We had a lot of shots and pushed the opponent to the last third but we had a lack of quality.
We need to win games and we deserve more that is clear. But it is our fault, we cannot concede the goal in the manner we do.
We know the characteristics of this team, and know one goal gives them the game that we love. We changed the game and helped them.

Ryan Yates on the shift Forest put in
120 minutes the other day - it is unbelievable. The determination, fans were incredible and buzzing to keep the run going. We’re having a great season. The past two seasons were about staying up, keeping our head above water, and we have got that momentum at the minute.
10:09 PM BST
Forest sitting pretty in Champions League race
10:03 PM BST
FT: Forest 1 United 0
Any doubts that existed about Forest’s staying power are surely being dispelled: that is now seven points from home fixtures against Arsenal, Man City and United in the last batch of games and (for now) they are 10 points clear of sixth.
This was a fairly ropey performance in truth, perhaps shaped by playing 120 minutes at Brighton in the FA Cup. But Anthony Elanga’s goal was fit to win any game and from there they battened down the hatches and held United at bay with some huge blocks and a sprinkling of good fortune.
The result is inconsequential for United’s league season. Defeat hurts, but Amorim will see some positives to take into the Europa League. Play like that and they will fancy their chances against Lyon.
10:00 PM BST
96 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
If Elanga scored one of the goals of the season, this is one of the campaign’s best defensive interventions. Murillo clears the ball of the line after the ball dropped for Maguire a few yards out and he squeezed a shot under Sels. The Brazilian lets out a huge roar in celebration and he team-mates descend to thank him for winning Forest two points there. A brilliant piece of defending. That’s when celebrating a clearance is justified.
The final whistle blows and Murillo sinks to his knees in prayer.
09:58 PM BST
96 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
United have a throw-in near the Forest corner flag. One last chance to deliver into the box, but Williams heads away Fernandes’ cross before Morato volleys away. Forest’s red wall still standing.
09:56 PM BST
94 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Ryan Yates has made three critical blocks on the edge of his own box tonight. United are enjoying waves of pressure now. Maguire knocks a header down in the box but Murillo hammers away.
Forest hanging on a touch, but Dominguez stays down holding his ankle to kill some precious seconds.
09:55 PM BST
92 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Chance for Maguire! Dorgu with a threatening cross, but Maguire cannot crane his neck to plant the header into an empty net with Sels out of the picture. In fairness, replays show the delivery was a touch behind Maguire.
09:54 PM BST
91 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
There will be six minutes of added time. United want a penalty for both a handball and then a trip in the box, before Sosa races away on the break for Forest only to try and fail to nutmeg Garnacho.
09:52 PM BST
89 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Fernandes tries to scoop a cross into the area but there is far too much on it and the ball runs through to Sels. Dorgu with an aimless cross that his headed away. United do not look likely to find the equaliser, their best openings came in the early stages of the game.
09:50 PM BST
87 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Harry Maguire is ready to come on for United, and I think Amorim sees this as an attacking change. He replaces Yoro and I think he is going to play up top. He has planted himself up against Milenkovic with Hojlund moving slightly to the right.
09:48 PM BST
84 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Elanga and Awoniyi have done their job in the eyes of Nuno, with Sosa and Sangare replacing them as Forest look to close this out. The home team have run the clock down and killed the tempo of the game effectively, much to the frustration of United fans watching.
09:46 PM BST
80 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
United have mustered 19 shots at goal to Forest’s five tonight, which sums up what has been a peculiar contest. But Nuno’s team are close to grinding out another vital win that would tighten their grip on a Champions League place.
09:42 PM BST
78 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Amorim making another change: United fans will be pleased to see Mason Mount back on the pitch after all his injury problems as he replaces Zirzkee.
And Mount almost scores within a minute of coming on, whipping a right-footed shot from 25 yards just wide of the near post.
09:39 PM BST
75 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
How many shots have Forest blocked this season? I doubt any team has blocked more. Williams with another there to deny Garnacho, before Dorgu’s header is straight at Sels.
Gibbs-White then runs straight at the United defence but he is crowded out when trying to make space for the shot in the box.
09:35 PM BST
72 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Hojlund with an unthreatening header from a wide free-kick that looped into the arms of Sels. Garnacho has been better in the last few minutes, the ball is sticking with him at least, but after some good control he blazes a wild shot over the bar.
09:32 PM BST
69 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
That was better from Garnacho, cushioning down Fernandes’ pass over the top. A raking ball from just outside the edge of his own box. Garnacho chops inside to shoot, but Ryan Yates produced a telling block for Forest. Crucial from the skipper.
From the corner, the ball dropped for Garnacho again, but he dragged a snap-shot wide of the near post.
09:28 PM BST
66 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Garnacho has been United’s poorest player tonight. He is flagged offside when looking all the way across the Forest backline, and is then booked for smashing the ball away in frustration. Fernandes threw his arms up after finding the winger with the sweeping pass. Fernandes takes some stick for those gesticulations, but he is justified in this case.
09:26 PM BST
64 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Dominguez is ready to come on for Forest, but United have a corner. Williams with the defending for Forest to block the cross. United have looked dangerous from these set-pieces tonight... but this time Forest win the first header.
09:24 PM BST
61 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Forest enjoying their strongest spell of the game, a sustained spell of possession in the United half. Yates then Fernandes after he was the victim of a nutmeg. Foul given, but United aggrieved there was no yellow card.
09:22 PM BST
59 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Amorim has seen enough to conclude leaving Casemiro hanging on a yellow is too much of a risk. Christian Eriksen replaces him. A very creative and technical midfield pair of Fernandes and Eriksen for United now, but you would not Gibbs-White to build up a head of steam against them if you are a United fan.
09:20 PM BST
57 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Ryan Yates and Casemiro in the thick of the action again. Casemiro goes down holding his face after Gibbs-White’s forearm caught him. Most definitely not violent, but Yates’ is barking up the wrong tree looking for a yellow for simulation.
09:16 PM BST
53 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Williams wants a free-kick for a foul by Dorgu, but the referee rightly judges that the Forest player threw himself forward to engineer the contact. Despite that let-off, it has not been the best few minutes for Dorgu who plays another loose pass when United were building an attack.
09:14 PM BST
51 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Garnacho with a sloppy pass inside his own half to present Gibbs-White with the ball but the Forest No 10 sliced a left-footed shot high, wide and handsome. Then Dorgu does likewise in the Forest half, allowing Elanga to set Forest forward on the break.
09:12 PM BST
49 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Onana with a super save to pluck Yates’ header off the line but the midfielder was half-a-yard offside in any case. Better from Forest in the build-up to carve out the opening.
Now Yates is down in midfield after appearing to be clattered by Casemiro. The United man is booked and is furious with that verdict. I’m not sure he has any grounds for complaint.
09:10 PM BST
47 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
United have a corner after an early run in behind from Hojlund. The referee awarded a goal kick but was instructed by his assistant to give the corner. For the third time tonight, United win a header at the near post but Casemiro’s effort was never troubling Sels.
09:08 PM BST
We are back under way in the second half
Forest get the second half started.
A half-time change from Amorim: Ugarte off for Hojlund, the kind of change you make when 1-0 down. Fernandes will drop into a deeper position.
09:05 PM BST
Says plenty
Anthony Elanga has 28 goal contributions in the Premier League since leaving Man United for £15m last season.

An unhappy habit
After Elanga’s goal, United have also conceded the joint-most goals from fast breaks in the Premier League this season.

A game that is finely balanced
Nottingham Forest are halfway towards securing a league double over Manchester United.
Anthony Elanga’s goal separates the two teams, but United will still believe they can get something here.
Bruno Fernandes has inevitably been involved in most of United’s threatening moments, though they find themselves up against a resilient home defence.
A concern for Nuno Espirito Santo will be the premature exit of defender Ola Aina through injury, which forced a major reshuffle of his back-line.
08:55 PM BST
HT: Forest 1 United 0
The home team have the lead but have been second-best for much of that half. Don’t take my word for it, take Nuno’s, with the Forest manager changing systems before the 40-minute mark with Morato replacing midfielder Danilo. Forest have also lost Aina to injury.
United with some nice interplay but lacking precision around the penalty area.
The one moment of quality end product came from Elanga with one of the best solo goals you will see this season. TV say he covered 85 metres in nine seconds with the ball at his feet.
08:52 PM BST
45+6 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
United’s final chance of the half to find the equaliser but Casemiro drags the shot well wide from distance after he was teed up by Fernandes. Forest’s midfield far too porous again in the build-up.
08:50 PM BST
45+4 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Lovely flick around the corner from Zirzkee into space for Garnacho with Forest’s backline zig-zagged across the pitch but the winger’s touch was too heavy which gave Milenkovic the chance to win a booming challenge.
08:49 PM BST
45+2 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
After an open first 25 minutes to the match, things have become bitty which suits Forest just fine. They will be looking to sit tight and wait for one or two chances on the counter to kill the game.
08:47 PM BST
45 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
There will be six minutes of stoppage time to play. De Ligt is down after twisting his ankle when falling awkwardly from an aerial challenge against Awoniyi but the Dutch defender is back on his feet now.
08:44 PM BST
42 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Anderson battling well against Garnacho near the touchline and Forest win the throw. Despite United’s good work overall, Garnacho has looked a little lightweight and too easily discouraged, not least on Elanga’s goal when he was shrugged off.
08:40 PM BST
39 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Williams and Murillo hanging legs out in the penalty area, but nothing doing for the time being. Anderson won the ball cleanly against Garnacho and there was no contact against Casemiro. This has been tough going for Forest despite the lead.
Nuno making another change: Morato on for Danilo. That looks like a switch to a back five to match up United’s system.
08:38 PM BST
37 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
A stoppage in play while Aina stays down to receive some treatment. We could be seeing the effect of extra time in the FA Cup at the weekend, and it looks like the Forest right-back’s race is run. Moreno is going to replace him.
08:32 PM BST
United playing well despite the scoreline
Manchester United may have conceded a calamitous goal but have not been too bad here.
Forest have appeared strangely nervy at times and United do look dangerous when they pour forward.
Diogo Dalot has seen a header come back off the crossbar and United are finding lots of space to exploit.
Forest are always a threat on the counter-attack, though, and Elanga’s goal will be a warning to the visitors.
08:32 PM BST
31 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Far too much space in Forest’s midfield for Casemiro to turn, run and feed a pass into Garnacho. He tees up Fernandes for another long-range shot but Murillo stands up to make the block. United’s approach play has been a significant improvement on what we have seen most of the season. Forest have scored with their only shot.
08:29 PM BST
28 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
United hit the bar! Once again, they threaten from a near-post header with Dalot glancing an effort on that bounced off the woodwork before Sels did enough on the rebound to palm the ball away and win a foul.
08:28 PM BST
26 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Yates now down after making a block tackle on Garnacho, their shins collided on the follow-through. A sore one for the Forest midfielder.
When play resumes, United win another corner. There has been plenty of talk about their wing-backs not offering enough offensively, but with Dalot on his natural right side and Dorgu on the left they have raided forward well.
08:25 PM BST
24 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Elanga galloping at an exposed United defence again but he took too long to decide between a pass or a shot and Casemiro hooked a leg around to win the ball back. Diligent defending from the Brazilian midfielder.
08:23 PM BST
22 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Elanga with a fine piece of skill down the left and then a trademark burst of pace to drag Forest up the pitch. Tough to call where the game is going to go from here: United have moved the ball slickly, but Forest look such a threat on the break. Fernandes penalised for a foul on Yates. Not shy of some needle, those two.
08:19 PM BST
18 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Sels sharp off his line to collected a low cross whipped across the area by Dorgu. Moments before that, Forest had another dangerous break from a United corner but Awoniyi ran the ball slightly too wide. Yates aggressive against Mazraoui in midfield.
08:15 PM BST
14 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
United continue to enjoy plenty of territory and a header is glanced wide at the near-post from a corner. I imagine Amorim will be happy enough with the general play. Fernandes, Casemiro and Ugarte with some neat one-touch passing through midfield.
Murillo then wants Sels to sweep up but the goalkeeper hesitates, allowing Zirkzee to steal in. He wins a corner.
08:11 PM BST
United’s loss is Forest’s gain
For another mistake in Manchester United’s recent history, look no further than the sale of Anthony Elanga.
He was sold to Nottingham Forest for just £13.5 million with his career never taking off at Old Trafford.
The Sweden international is leading on assists for Forest this season and has now scored his sixth goal against his old club.
United had started well, too, but have been knocked out of their stride.
08:10 PM BST
9 minutes: Forest 1 United 0
Immediately after conceding, United have another short on target through Fernandes. A bright and breezy opening spell but now Forest have the game state they love; the chance to soak up pressure and break at speed.
08:08 PM BST
GOOOAALL! What a solo goal by Elanga
Against his former club, Elanga has just scored one of the individual goals of the season. Forest cleared the United corner, before Elanga brushed off a couple of challenges in midfield with United’s defenders back-peddling in fear of his pace. Elanga could have passed for Gibbs-White but he took on the shot with his left foot from the edge of the box and found the bottom corner.
That was one of the goals of the season from Anthony Elanga. He ran from his own half and for most of the way the Forest fans were deseprate for him to release the ball to Gibbs-White. His pace and control was so remarkable, however, that he just opened United up. Garnacho chased him hard but he and no-one else was swift enough. Elanga toned down the celebrations as a former United man. His team-mates and the home crowd made up for it.
08:06 PM BST
4 minutes: Forest 0 United 0
No Sels pushes a Fernandes shot from 25 yards after a neat lay-off by Garnacho.
08:05 PM BST
2 minutes: Forest 0 United 0
Bright enough start from the away team but Garnacho runs the ball out for a goal kick when he looked to be in behind Murillo. Forest’s opponents tend to see plenty of the ball, it is a question of how much they can create with it. Yoro is playing on the right of the back three with Mazraoui on the left.

Manchester United get the game under way.

The players are in the tunnel at the City Ground
Barely room to swing a cat down in there. Now the players are on the way out. Not an empty seat to be seen. Forest fans know this is another big one having taken four points from Arsenal and Man City here before the break.

Amorim on his selection
We have to find ways to win games. We have a lot of things to win this season; we have to improve in the table and compete for the Europa League so every minute of every game is
We try to look at the opponent and the training and to find the best qualities of the players to win the game. It is important to think of the players who can change the game halfway through.
You can see from the line up Bruno will play a little bit ahead, but Bruno is everywhere.
07:37 PM BST
Bruno Fernandes makes his 278th United appearance
It means he is now level on appearances with Luke Shaw, despite joining the club five-and-a-half years later in January 2020.
That says plenty about Shaw’s lack of availability in recent campaigns, though I think we should always remember he suffered a horrible leg break when he was flying at the start of the 2015-16 season.
Much like former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey who suffered a similar fate as a young player, muscular injuries have been a problem ever since.

Nuno manager of the year?
Manager of the Year? Nuno Espirito Santo must have a huge chance.
Nottingham Forest were battling relegation last season, and the campaign before, but have been inspired under their Portuguese manager this term.

The reason Hudson-Odoi misses out
Callum Hudson-Odoi will miss tonight’s game due to a personal matter.
The £3 million signing from Chelsea has been one of Nottingham Forest’s standout stars this season and scored in the last game at the City Ground, in the 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Top scorer Chris Wood is also out with a hip problem, but Forest hope he could return for this weekend’s game at Aston Villa.
07:19 PM BST
Zirkzee on if pieces of skill have won United fans around
Maybe a little bit for the little kids, but I think it’s just important to be effective as well when you do it. It doesn’t always work, but I think the fans like it when a player just goes out on a pitch and just tries and works hard. And that’s what we’re all just trying to do in this team. Just go out there with confidence and be the best version of ourselves.

Nuno on Forest’s short turnaround after 120 minutes in the Cup
It’s very difficult on the players but they are recovering well. They are always being positive so we are confident we can perform against a good team.
These short turnarounds are all about recovering and fortunately the match is in the evening so it will gives us the day to finalise the details, so we will be OK.

Forest have been in the top four for 101 days
This season’s magic carpet ride under Nuno Espirito Santo continues to roll on at Nottingham Forest.
They remain in contention for a place in next season’s Champions League and now have an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City to look forward to later this month.
Nuno is the king of taking “one game at a time” and he will not tolerate any distractions with the focus turning back to Forest’s league campaign.
It is now 101 days that Forest have occupied the top-four of the Premier League, and they have the chance to secure a domestic double over United tonight.
The City Ground will be bouncing.
07:01 PM BST
Is the oil tanker turning?
Is the tide starting to turn for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United?
After booking a place in the Europa League quarter-final, where they will face Lyon over two legs later this month, United are also unbeaten in four matches in the Premier League.
These are small steps for a club of United’s size and history, but it does feel like Amorim is making some progress.
Finally, he can look ahead with a degree of optimism despite so many brief moments of promise in this excruciating period of underachievement.
Securing a win or a draw at the City Ground tonight would certainly be further evidence that the giant oil tanker is creaking into life.
06:59 PM BST
Amorim on Bruno Fernandes’ future
I want Bruno here because maybe in the lowest moments of our season (he impressed). We want to win the Premier League again, so we want the best players to continue with us.
He’s 29, I think, but he’s still so young because he plays 55 games every season. Between assists and goals, he’s there for 30 at least so he’s the type of player we want here so he’s not going anywhere.

Forest failing to qualify for the Champions League would now be disappointing
Nottingham Forest’s season scaled new heights on Saturday when they reached an FA Cup semi-final but attention now turns to securing Champions League qualification via the Premier League.
Achieving European football of any stripe would have been seen as a remarkable effort in August, but in truth it would now be deflating if Forest missed out on the top-five finish required to reach Europe’s Premier club competition.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team have a seven-point cushion to Newcastle United in sixth, albeit Newcastle have played a game fewer and are buoyant following their League Cup success.
Forest’s final nine league fixtures look quite favourable, but tonight’s home game against Manchester United and trips to Aston Villa and Spurs over the next few weeks look key.
United fans would have been fearing the worst for this fixture a couple of months ago, but there were flickers of promise from Ruben Amorim’s team before the international break.
In fact, United are unbeaten in their last seven games across all competitions. They were convincing winners over two legs against Real Sociedad in the Europa League last-16 and could well have beaten Arsenal at Old Trafford but for some sharp David Raya saves. The gloomier lens through which to view this run: the only teams United have beaten domestically since the turn of the year are Leicester City (twice), Ipswich Town, Southampton and Fulham.
The remainder of their season hinges on continued progression in the Europa League but this is United after all, where back-to-back defeats spell crisis no matter the competition. Amorim is boosted by the return of Harry Maguire and Lenny Yoro, which should give United’s back three a more robust feel. It is still too soon for Luke Shaw to return, which is likely to be the case for this weekend’s Manchester derby.
Forest continue to sweat on Chris Wood’s fitness after the striker sustained a hip problem during the international break. Should he miss out, Nuno will have a choice between Taiwo Awoniyi as a like-for-like replacement or bringing in Jota and shifting Anthony Elanga to centre-forward in a more mobile frontline.
Full team news on the way shortly.
