Multi-award-winning football writer Stephen McGowan has joined The Herald's sports team.

Renowned for his exclusive stories, insightful interviews and sharp columns, he makes the move after over two decades at the Daily Mail where he was latterly chief football writer.

Stephen is a former sports columnist of the year and a two-time winner of the sports news writer award at the Scottish Press Awards.

He will write a weekly column every Monday reflecting on the red meat issues facing Scottish football alongside regular news and features.

Stephen said: "I’m both pleased and excited to be joining one of the longest running and most highly respected daily newspapers around and adding my voice to a strong team of top writers. I can't wait to get started."

Newsquest Scotland's Head of Sport, Jonny McFarlane, welcomed the new arrival to the team.

He said: "Stephen is one of the country's finest journalists so we are delighted he's decided to continue his outstanding career with The Herald.

"His ability to write sharp opinion pieces that cut through the often noisy bluster of Scottish football will delight our readers while his deep contact book will ensure they are the first to know many of the stories that matter in the months and years ahead.

"His joining is a statement of intent to make our sports coverage better than ever."
