Former Carlisle United midfielder Antony Sweeney is part of a caretaker regime after a League One sacking.

He has stepped up as interim assistant boss at Crawley Town after the sacking of manager Rob Elliot.

The third tier's third-bottom club axed Elliot on Wednesday after just five months in charge.

The former Gateshead boss had taken Sweeney and Louis Storey with him to Sussex last autumn.

Storey has now been placed in caretaker charge with Sweeney supporting him. Their first game as the interim regime will come against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

It is the latest role in Sweeney's coaching career, which has also seen positions at Hartlepool United.

The 41-year-old was a Carlisle player from 2014 to 2016, making 58 appearances and scoring six goals under Graham Kavanagh and Keith Curle.

He had previously enjoyed a long stint with Hartlepool, and after Carlisle went on to have a playing spell at Gateshead, before returning to the Monkey Hangers for a series of coaching roles at youth and first-team level.

Crawley said in a statement: "Crawley Town Football Club has today parted company with Manager Rob Elliot.

"Louis Storey will take control of the squad as Interim Head Coach, with Anthony Sweeney supporting him as Interim Assistant Head Coach.

"The club would like to thank Rob for all of his efforts during his time at the Broadfield Stadium and wish him all the best for the future."
