It's been a long time since Newcastle United star Dan Burn pushed trolleys in the Blyth Asda store - but they’ve never forgotten their ‘much-loved’ former colleague.

Asda staff have been living and breathing the Burn buzz this week after the Magpies ended their 70-year wait for domestic silverware - all thanks to the help of their ex-trolley porter.

Burn worked at the store when he was just 16 years old - donning a high-vis vest and pushing trolleys once a week while studying sports science and playing football in Darlington.

And now, in celebration of the Blyth-born defender, who last week received his first call-up to the England squad, the town’s Asda store is retiring its number 33 porter jacket.

The store said it wanted to do something to commemorate their ex-colleague following his “stunning” performance in the Carabao Cup final, which saw him head home the Magpies’ opening goal from Kieran Trippier’s corner in the 45th minute.

Store manager Dean Johnson said "There's been such a buzz around the store this week following the win and we just wanted to celebrate the achievements of our former colleague and to let him know how proud of him we are (and the team).

"In ode to Dan we've now retired the no 33 Asda porter jacket - we plan to get it framed and displayed it in the store, we're hoping that Dan will pay us a visit soon along with the trophy."

Just hours after the Liverpool clash, the fan favourite arrived at St George’s Park on Monday after being called into Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

This week Burn has also been poised to receive the Freedom of Northumberland following the cup victory, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The retiring of the porter jacket isn’t the only way Asda is planning on celebrating either, with Diane Dinning, Asda's community champion, putting on a special "Dan Burn Day" this Friday.

All colleagues have been encouraged to wear the famous Newcastle black and white colours - and they'll even be provided with a special matchday pie and pea lunch.
