Sir Gareth Southgate has revealed that his plan is to "stay out of the way" as Thomas Tuchel steps up for his inaugural stint as England manager.

Taking the reins for the first time on Friday, Tuchel will lead England in a World Cup qualifying game against Albania at Wembley, having been confirmed as Southgates replacement back in October.

Following the conclusion of Southgate's eight-year spell last summer, after England's European Championship final defeat to Spain, he provided insights into his journey during The Richard Dimbleby Lecture aired on the BBC.

When questioned by ex-Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein about the counsel he'd offer Tuchel, Southgate offered: "I've already decided, I think the best way I can help the next England manager is to stay out of the way."

Adding further, the former manager stressed the delicacy of the role saying: "Because you know how difficult the job is and you know that any comment you make can create a headline, can create more pressure for the person that's in post."

He then shared a personal reflection: "I've had my time, I loved it, I'm not missing too much of it at the moment, but I think it's important I stay out of the way and allow Thomas to do his job."

With Tuchel's second bout also set for Wembley against Latvia on Monday, the German is poised to carry forward Southgate's legacy of leading England to two significant tournament finals.

Southgate himself was linked with a move to Manchester United as a result of his fine work with the England team, but no move was forthcoming with Ruben Amorim replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag last year.

Southgate is currently out of work, but does have plans to write a book about his time as the Three Lions' leader.
