FORMER York City goalkeeper Nick Pope celebrated winning a major English trophy yesterday.

The shot-stopper was a part of the Newcastle United squad that lifted the EFL Cup, after defeating Premier League leaders Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.

Dan Burn had put the Magpies ahead in the 45th minute, before a first-time strike from Alexander Isak doubled Newcastle's advantage.

A stoppage-time effort from Federico Chiesa was merely a consolation, with Eddie Howe's Newcastle holding on to win the EFL Cup.

Pope started and played the full 90 minutes, also receiving a yellow card in stoppage-time.

He's come a long way since his York days, having played for the football club in the 2013/14 season.

The goalkeeper joined on an initial one-month loan and played twice, before being recalled by parent club Charlton Athletic.

He would return in January, and proved to be a key part of Nigel Worthington's side as they broke into the League Two play-offs.

Pope managed to keep 16 clean sheets in 24 games, as City fell short in the play-off semi-finals against Fleetwood Town.

Since his loan at the Minstermen has come to an end, Pope has gone on to establish himself as one of the best English goalkeepers around, playing over 180 times for Burnley and becoming Newcastle's number one.

Also in the Newcastle team was winger Harvey Barnes - son of former York icon Paul Barnes.

Paul Barnes made 148 appearances for City across a four year spell, scoring 76 times, helping the club gain promotion to Division Two via the play-offs.

He was also named as Clubman of the Year for York in the 1993/94 season.

His son, Harvey, played 81 minutes of the final before being replaced by Joe Willock.
