Hundreds of Newcastle United fans gathered at St James' Park tonight after their historic Carabao Cup win.

Hanging over the stairs, waving flags and shouting chants - fans from across the city chose to express their joy at Newcastle's 2-0 victory over Liverpool at St James' Park tonight.

Wearing their shirts and draped in scarves, many posed for pictures as they hugged their family and friends murmuring "I can't believe it".

The match itself was a tense first half, but it was rapidly becoming clear that Newcastle were in control and the toon managed to gain the upper hand and by the second half they were 2 –0 up.

And, despite a late goal from Liverpool, it wasn't enough to lead them to victory.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak ended 70 years of hurt for the Magpies when they scored their goals and also made Eddie Howe the first homegrown manager to win one of English men’s football’s major trophies in almost 17 years.

Following the match, manager Eddie Howe told Sky Sports: “Very emotional, I’ve been emotional all day to be honest, which is very unlike me around the game day.

“But we just knew what was at stake today for all the people here, all the people back in Newcastle and we just wanted to do them proud.

“We were desperate to try and win the trophy after all the years of hurt. I’m so pleased not just with the result, but with the performance. I thought we deserved the win today.”
