Harvey Elliott had to be helped off the pitch after being left dazed by an awful challenge from Joelinton during the closing moments of the League Cup final. Liverpool fell to a 2-1 defeat as goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak either side of half-time clinched victory for Newcastle United.

Federico Chiesa halved the deficit in stoppage-time, finishing well after being played in by Elliott with the goal eventually being given after a VAR review. But Arne Slot’s men were unable to find an even later equaliser to force extra-time.

During the closing embers of the match, Joelinton struck Elliott from behind off the ball after the Reds midfielder had already passed to a team-mate.

VAR did check the incident for potential violent conduct after Joelinton pulled down Elliott but quickly decided against intervening as the Brazilian avoided any punishment.

The England Under-21s international received treatment on the pitch but completed the game, with Slot having used all five of his substitutes already.

However, following the final whistle, Elliott was spotted in heap on the floor as he received further treatment following the clash as concerned team-mates watched on, while Newcastle’s players celebrated in front of their own fans.

The midfielder did belatedly get to his feet and make his way off the pitch, but he limped off slowly and gingerly while supported by two members of Liverpool’s backroom staff, holding onto one of them for support.

Meanwhile, he was still limping when spotted leaving Wembley later in the evening. The Reds are next in action at home to Everton on Wednesday 2 April, while Elliott is due to represent England Under-21s during the March international break.
