The last time Manchester United faced off against a crowd of over 100,000 was during a pre-season tour of the USA in 2018.

The men’s International Champions cup ran from 2013 to 2019 and often frequented the 107,601 capacity Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor where José Mourinho’s United and Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool drew a crowd of 101,254 seven years ago.

United came into the game missing key defensive players with Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia through injury while Chris Smalling had to be replaced just before kick-off as a precaution for a potential minor injury.

The Liverpool squad had a strong line-up with the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, James Milner and younger faces like Curtis Jones all getting game time. Sadio Mané scored the first goal from a penalty won by Mo Salah but United hit back quickly with a goal from an Andreas Pereira free kick three minutes later.

The fans were on their feet for Mourinho as he jumped from his seat to catch a clearance that flew towards the bench, while there was a pitch invader 15 minutes into the second half.

United lost 4-1 to a Liverpool team who went on to be runners-up to Man City in the Premier League and finish with 97 points.
