Arne Slot admits Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury “didn’t look very good” and expects the Liverpool vice-captain to miss Sunday’s League Cup final.

But the Reds boss is confident Ibrahima Konate will be available for the showdown against Newcastle United at Wembley.

Alexander-Arnold was forced off after 73 minutes of the Champions League round of 16 second leg exit against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night after landing awkwardly while making a challenge.

The right-back will now undergo scans to ascertain the extent of the damage with Liverpool fearing the 26-year-old could face an extended spell on the sidelines.

And Slot said: “Trent had to come off and that’s never a good sign. From what I’ve heard from people who have seen how he got injured, it didn’t look very good.

“I’d be surprised if he was available for Sunday.”

Konate was substituted in the second half of extra time after hobbling for several minutes before falling to the turf and having treatment.

But Slot added: “I have to ask but for me Ibou was more that he was tired than an injury.”

Liverpool will now have to regroup for the Wembley date on Sunday. But Slot has no concerns there will be a psychological impact for the loss to PSG, with the French side winning 1-0 on the night to level the tie at 1-1 before winning 4-1 on penalties.

And Slot said: “Mentally, the best you can ask for is that we have a final next. This is what we play football for, to play in finals.

“Then there’s two-and-a-half weeks in between before we start the season again. We want to play nine games with this intensity (as tonight) and we want the same intensity at home from the fans.”
