Injury-hit Darlington scored a last-gasp winner to grab the points against Radcliffe at Blackwell Meadows last night and two-goal Jack Maskell was the hero.

The young striker had put Quakers 1-0 ahead with a fine strike towards the end of the first half,  scoring from around 20 yards.

And then with the game drifting toward a 1-1 draw, Brad Jackson having equalised, Maskell added a winner deep in added time after a Will Hatfield free-kick.

The win was particularly impressive as Quakers were without a handful of players due to injury, and during the course of the match lost two defenders, Elliot Forbes and Scott Barrow, to injury.

Radcliffe had a chance in the first minute, when Scott Duxbury came in unnoticed behind the back of the Darlington defence, and volleyed a cross from the right by George Glendon high and wide from six yards.

Steve Watson’s side nearly scored themselves when Ben Hedley picked the ball up on the right, cut inside a defender, and curled a left foot shot towards the top left corner which Mateusz Hewelt just managed to tip over the bar.

Quakers were forced into an early sub when Forbes, who had picked up an early knock, came off and was replaced by loanee Charlie Stirland.

Some good play involving Hatfield and Hetherington found Cornish in space on the right, but his low cross rebounded off a defender and them off him for a goal kick.

Jameson came to Quakers’ rescue on 25 minutes when George Glendon ran at the heart of the Darlington defence and set up Danny Greenfield ten yards out, but the keeper just managed to block with his outstretched right foot.

Quakers responded with a cross from the right by Hedley for Maskell to head on to the roof of the net, and then they stunned Radcliffe by taking the lead on 42 minutes.

Hedley, who had been fouled just inside the Radcliffe half, hoisted a free kick into the area where Will Flint laid the ball back for the waiting Maskell just outside the box, and he blasted a half-volley into the the top right corner to leave Hewelt helpless.

Radcliffe had some good pressure at the start of the second half and Hedley and Scott Barrow both made clearances.

Darlington nearly made it 2-0 when Barrow whipped a low free kick in from the left, and Lees, coming in volleyed first time just wide of the left hand post.

However, Radcliffe went up the other end and equalised, when Tom Walker crossed for Brad Jackson to volley past Jameson.

Quakers made two substitutions in the space of three minutes, with the second of them out of necessity as Barrow was clearly struggling with an injury, so Jarrett Rivers replaced him.

Nevertheless, Darlington kept pushing, and Bakre made a good run into the box on 73 minutes  and set up Rivers, who fired wide of the post.

Recent signing Ben Andreucci, on loan from Bolton, made a good run down the right and set up Flint, who fired straight at Hewelt from 25 yards.

But in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Hatfield floated a free kick into the box for Maskell to glance a dramatic winner past the keeper.

Darlington stay tenth, but are now seven points off seventh with ten games to play and matches in hand on the teams above them.
