Fresh off an impressive victory against Rajesh Kumar, Alex Murphy is gearing up for the biggest fight of his career to date.
The 23-year-old will take on Bolton’s Khaleel Majid in a 10-round English title eliminator bout on Saturday, April 5.
The match will take place at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester. Joe Joyce was scheduled to face Dillian Whyte in the main event but the latter has now pulled out with an injury.
“What I want now, with my goals and plans, it all seems to be going in the right direction,” he told The Bolton News.
“Get the job done here, get the win and then I will be fighting for the English title which is what we want.
“Khaleel is a good boxer. I like his style, I like how he boxes. I feel like he is very similar to myself.
“He's tall, long range and he boxes well so I'm expecting a tough fight. But I know I'm more than capable of beating him, it's going to be an exciting one.”
Murphy boasts an unbeaten professional record from his 13 fights so far and believes it is the right time to test himself on the big stage.
“I feel like my last few opponents have been a step up and tough tests, which was basically prepping me for a fight like this,” he added.
“I've come through these tough tests with flying colours so I think it shows I'm more than ready for a fight like this.
“I think it's the right time, the right stage and what a platform, what a venue to do it on. When the opportunity came about, I jumped at it.”
It was another assured performance against Kumar to secure the victory in front of local support at Bolton Whites Hotel.
“It was a tough fight but I thought I boxed well,” Murphy reflected. “The performance was good, the tactics going into the fight worked a treat.
“He was a tough opponent, he was fitter than we thought. The support was great and sometimes when it’s getting tough, it’s good to hear the crowd. It motivates me tough pull something special out and just keep going.”
The 23-year-old was given a few days to recharge his batteries and now the hard work starts up again as he aims to take another step towards becoming a champion.
“I’m back in training now,” he beamed. “I have got strength and conditioning in the morning and then boxing at night.
“For a few days after the fight, I was resting up and enjoying a bit of downtime. Now we are back on it.
“There is not long to go, the fight is about five weeks away so I’ve got to get straight back to it now.”
