Barrow boss Andy Whing claimed Carlisle United’s “time-wasting” should have been dealt with better by the referee.

But the Bluebirds head coach also admitted United’s 1-0 win at Holker Street was mainly down to his own side’s poor finishing.

“[A] penalty decision went against us - the lad’s led with his arm, it’s an absolute stonewall penalty.

“Frustrating with them time-wasting – if the shoe was on the other foot we’d do exactly the same, but the referee’s got to be a lot stronger with that.

“It started in the first half, but that’s no excuse for us."

Matt Dennis’s 19th-minute goal separated the sides as bottom-placed Carlisle moved to  within two points of safety, while Barrow are 11 points above the relegation zone in 18th.

“I’m gutted obviously for the supporters more than anyone. I know what it means,” said Whing in a " target="_blank" class="link"> club interview.

“I thought we started the game really well, created some fantastic chances and that’s ultimately what’s cost us – we didn’t put our chances away.

“We had five good chances before they scored. And they scored with their only half chance in the game, really – a little bobble into the bottom corner.

“We huffed and puffed, we started the second half well, and the last 20 minutes or so, when the game gets a bit ragged, we lacked a bit of composure, probably going too direct instead of coming out and going into wide areas which we did well in the first half.

“I understand [the feelings] as a fan – especially these big derby games, our really poor record against them, where they are in the league.

“But we’ve created really good chances and not put them away. That’s the overriding disappointment. We lacked that composure and care in front of goal.

“We shouldn’t have lost the game but we have so we have to lick our wounds and learn from it.

“I’m big and ugly enough to face criticism from the fans – especially in a game like this they want to win and see the lads leave everything out there.

“Ultimately we failed because we didn’t get the win.”
