Manchester United have reportedly entered the race for highly-rated Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia amid concerns over the form of Andre Onana.

The United goalkeeper has made a number of errors since signing for the club in 2023 from Inter. Onana joined Erik ten Hag's squad to replace David De Gea in a deal that cost £47million.

On Wednesday night, he had a part to play in both of Ipswich Town's goals in United's 3-2 win. After rushing off his line to defend a long ball over the United defence, Onana was left in no man's land when Patrick Dorgu's attempted pass handed Jaden Philogen a tap-in.

For the second, Onana mis-read Philogene's cross-turned-shot off the right to make it 2-2 on the brink of half-time. Fortunately, Harry Maguire netted the winner in the second-half to avoid another Premier League banana skin.

The two errors come after Onana failed to cover himself in glory at Everton on Saturday. The inconsistency and major mistakes from the 28-year-old have resulted in doubts over his long-term future as Ruben Amorim's number one.

These doubts will only intensify ahead of the summer transfer window with reports claiming United have joined Arsenal and Manchester City in the race to sign Garcia from Espanyol. The Spaniard was linked with a move to the Gunners last summer but uncertainty over his role with Mikel Arteta led to him remaining in La Liga.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, United will consider a move for the former Spain Under-21 international in the summer. It's understood that Garcia has a release clause of around £25million, slightly more than the reported £20.9m he was available for last year.

A move for Garcia would likely spell the end of Onana's time in England after two seasons. The Cameroon international has been the number one since his move from Italy despite calls for Altay Bayindir to be handed a run in the team.

Former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand criticised Onana after his mistakes against Ipswich, saying: "a terrible start. I don’t think Dorgu, at any moment, looks up to sees where Onana is.

“Onana doesn’t need to come in. The full-back is in complete control and he can just hold his ground and let him play it back to him. But Dorgu doesn’t look, the awareness isn’t there and it’s pounced on. Ipswich took a deserved lead for pouncing on that lack of communication.”
