WANDERERS have confirmed that Victor Adebjoyejo could face surgery on knee ligament damage sustained in last weekend’s win against Leyton Orient.
The former Burton Albion man is seeking advice from a specialist to see whether he will need an operation to repair the damage but it is not in contention for a place in the squad at Wrexham.
Adeboyejo did report for training this week and is not thought to be in discomfort but the result of scans this week have forced Bolton to seek further reassurance that he is not at risk of sustaining serious injury by playing on.
“He had to come off in the closing stages of the game against Orient, having landed awkwardly on his knee, and unfortunately he went for a scan on Tuesday and the scans came back with some ligament damage in his knee,” Steven Schumacher explained. “Now, we don't know the full extent of the ligament damage yet, but he definitely won't be available for this week.
“As we speak, he is with a surgeon who is going to speak to him and see what the next course of action is, so we'll have to just see how that goes.
“We don't know yet if he is going to have surgery. It is a bit of a complicated one because it isn’t like a normal ligament injury so we’ll have to wait until he has seen the specialist, get the right information, and then take it from there.”
There is better news for Wanderers with Eoin Toal back available after missing the Orient game with a thigh strain but Gethin Jones is not fit after struggling to overcome a rib injury picked up at Shrewsbury.
Kyle Dempsey has also joined in non-contact training as his bid to play again this season continues. The midfielder has not featured since October but has managed to avoid surgery on his knee and is now working to rehabilitate.
“It was a challenge for Dempsey not to tackle anyone,” Schumacher joked. “But he was a floater, so it was good to have him back.”
Chris Forino and Carlos Mendes Gomes both featured for the B Team in midweek and could be included in the squad, and though Ricardo Santos missed out on the start of the week’s training through illness, he is also making progress from a pelvic injury which has kept him out since January.
“He has been back out there today on the grass, and the plan for him is to keep trying to build up his endurance, because that injection that he had just takes a bit of time to settle in,” Schumacher said. “He still isn't going to be available for this weekend, and we'll see how the plan is for him next week.”
