Patrick Dorgu had made a good start to his time at Manchester United but his first-half performance against Ipswich Town was a brutal reality check. Dorgu made a mistake for Ipswich's first goal and he was shown a red card just before the interval after a horror challenge on Omari Hutchinson.

Dorgu looked desperate to atone for the mistake he made for Jaden Philogene's opener. It was no surprise to see him sent off after an unnecessarily lengthy VAR review and he was applauded by the Stretford End as he trudged off the pitch.

The mix-up between Andre Onana and Dorgu for Ipswich's first goal was awful, and Dorgu was the most culpable after failing to recognise his goalkeeper was coming to collect the ball.

Philogene tapped into an empty net and Ipswich's fans taunted United with chants of 'Kieran McKenna, he left because you're s***', but it didn't take long for United to respond thanks to a Sam Morsy own-goal.

Dorgu looked relieved and United soon went 2-1 up thanks to Matthijs de Ligt, although that didn't seem enough for him to forget about his earlier mistake, as his challenge on Hutchinson was rash and the type of tackle made by a young player who was desperate to prove a point.

Anyone can make a bad challenge, of course, but the inexperience of Dorgu showed because he didn't need to make the tackle. United had completed a turnaround after his error, they were heading into half-time with a one-goal lead and Dorgu's sending off shifted the momentum.

Dorgu looked crestfallen as referee Darren England gave him his marching orders, but he could have no complaints and Ipswich made it 2-2 just moments after he left the pitch.

The 20-year-old will learn from his sending off and become a better payer for it. Dorgu needed to remain composed after his mistake but he was desperate to make up for it, which seemed to lead to the red card.

Dorgu has looked like the only player who is comfortable in Ruben Amorim's system and he can't be disheartened by his sending off as he had made a strong start at United prior to last night.

It has been no coincidence that Dorgu has been one of United's best players since his arrival from Lecce because he was signed to play in Amorim's formation, unlike his teammates.

Amorim must be given players who can operate in his 3-4-3 system in the summer window and Dorgu's first few weeks in Manchester have shown that United need a player like him on the right side.

Diogo Dalot made a nervy start to the game against Ipswich and is enduring a poor season. United must sign a high-quality right wing-back in the summer window, someone like Dorgu who can play on that side, because Amorim's system relies heavily on having two quality wing-backs.

Thankfully for Dorgu, United still found a way to win after his sending off and it wasn't the decisive moment in the game.

Dorgu was bound to face challenges after his move to Old Trafford. It's a rite of passage for a new United signing to suffer and Dorgu will become better for it.
